Michael and friends
I pray it isn’t so, but early evidence suggests we’re all in for a season of nightmares, arriving in the form of heartwarming montages and redemptive op-ed columns.
What am I talking about? Well, little Michael Owen’s scored in his first two games for United, and I am already nervous. More than anything else, I don’t want United to succeed in the wake of C-Ron’s departure thanks to one of my club’s best strikers of the last 25 years.
The tiny, rehabbing (of the physical and image varieties) striker is free of the Magpies, and against a Malaysia XI, he bagged the second of their goals with an instinctual finish that hasn’t been seen since his time in Madrid. When you add it to the winner he scored on Saturday, and the four horseman are starting to get dressed and sorted for their invasion.
Granted, we must consider the following (not sure why both my posts today have involved some kind of crude numbered list, but there you go):
1. He’s been playing in Malaysia, a country not exactly known for soccer.
2. Both goals were a little scrappy; first was more or less a tap-in, second was due to some woefully lazy defending that made it easy for him.
I realize the latter point can be discounted with the saying “right place, right time”, but remember, this is Michael Owen, a man hobbled by injury and questionable career decisions.
Owen’s 2nd goal for United
Either way, we must realize that this sort of thing will likely happen somewhat regularly in the EPL, and this will make me very, very sad. He was never supposed to do this for Manchester United!

Remember when Darren Bent scored all those goals last summer? Yeah turned out really well for him and Spurs during the season. So there’s still hope.
Didn’t Dos Santos score like five in a game last summer?
And having watched nearly all of Liverpool’s preseason games the past four years here is a list of our best performers from the preseason:
- Andriy Voronin
- Jermaine Pennant
- Mark Gonzalez
- David Ngog
- Craig Bellamy
- Paul Anderson
- Jack Hobbs
Yeah. Whatever. Though I do appreciate that Soccernet is running an article every time Owen scores.
It’s the second coming!
Jesus already came back, nobody noticed though, all that happened was some VHS tapes were erased.
Who said anything about jesus?
I think he’ll score lots of goals just like this all season long. Sorry.
Why is Macheda still wearing 41. Surely last season’s late show won him a squad number from 1-25.
none of the 1-25s were open…someone would have to give theirs up and take 41 or some other random number. Is there a rule on shirt numbers a la the NFL?
He could have taken 7, no? Or 32?
“He could have taken 7, no?”
No. Owen has 7.
I wouldn’t worry too much. Luke Moore ripped Inter a new a**hole in preseason two years ago. I somehow remember him not being able to get off the bench during that season.
Yeah, but he has been under contract for longer with United and the number was open once Ronaldo left. He had the opportunity, but probably pissed his shortpants thinking about living up to that number. I bet under the seniority system, as in seniority on the squad he could have pipped Owen to the number.
He’s made of glass… this will last until he takes his first knock in his 2nd EPL appearance and leaves with some sort of knee or foot injury.
How do I get my wordpress login to work in these comments?
Main story on Soccernet right now is about Ronaldo ‘not producing his trademark magic’ in his first friendly.
START THE DAMN SEASON!
@hock: no idea. we are trying to figure that out ourselves. seems that some of us have two wordpress logins. one for other blogs and one for this blog. there seems to be no communication between the two. still sorting things out.
Whoa whoa….United are sporting El Tri knockoff kit this year?
This format is confusing and scary. It might be important to note that I am terrified of beige.
“United are sporting El Tri knockoff kit this year?”
No, it’s a specially designed shirt to commemorate their centennial! Or so I was told by some snooty United dickbags when I pointed out it’s a rehash of a three year old jersey for a s**tty national team.
@TFA: You’re on WordPress.org I presume, which is why the old wordpress.com doesn’t work here. Even if you can’t login (which can be odd with WP.org sites anyways) you should be able to put your email in the mail field and it’ll show your avatar regardless of what you put the username as.
Let’s test what Adam says…waiting for avatar…waiting…waiting.
Hey, no time stamps on the posts either? The boot room is going to suck this year, I just know it…
He’s right, it works.
Speaking of Avatar, should I buy or sell the new movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0499549/
Pros: Stars Sigourney Weaver; Directed by James Cameron (he did do Aliens and Terminator 2); will be shown in IMAX
Cons: Stars Michelle Rodriguez; Directed by James Cameron (he did do Titanic and True Lies); Will be in 3-D.
I say sell.
Did you just besmirch True Lies? Gtfo.
