Former Norwich and Manchester United midfielder Phil Mulryne is leaving football at the grand old age of 31 to pursue a rather interesting new career. No more WAGS, no more fast cars and beer fuelled night club outings. Mulryne is going to become a priest!
Mulryne, who played 161 times for Norwich City and 27 times for Northern Ireland could be ordained as a priest in just 7 years at 38, while some of his former colleagues could still be playing.
“It was a big decision” - Phil’s mother Sally.
Mulryne came through the United youth system but made just one appearance before moving to Norwich. Opportunities at United were limited as he had Beckham, Butt and Scholes in front of him in the pecking order. His career was often plagued by injury’s including a rather horrific leg break while playing for Norwich. He also played for Cardiff City, Leyton Orient and non-league Kings Lynn.
Phil will start his training for God Athletic in August, the former middy is currently on a retreat. I wonder if he will have a kick about with the Nuns? Football can be a hard habit to break. Oooof. I’ll let myself out.
