Sometimes, things that seem like a good idea should be run past as many people as possible. Just because the suits like it and the people who make it think it’s a fine idea doesn’t mean that it will fly with the fans. Case in point: the Everton away shirt from 1992-94.
If the story I have is true, Umbro are most to blame for this week’s disaster. Umbro spent the early ’90s taking inspiration from the colors of a club’s past. In 1992, they went almost a little over a century in the past to find the new look for Everton’s away shirt. The problem is, thy forgot to look at the club in the other side of Stanley Park, and so did the Everton board who signed off on it.
Can you spot the problem? What started off as a salmon and navy color scheme saw the salmon get a little darker. What the fans saw was an Everton shirt that was red. Historical in nature or not, the fans in the ’90s were not going to wear a shirt that, at a glance, could be mistaken for their main rival. Who would?
It could, as always, be worse. This mockup of a new Everton away shirt has been floating around the interwebs for a while now. While Le Coq Sportif have unveiled the (ugly) new home shirt, nothing has been finalized about another shirt. Umbro might wish that this was for real, because then they would be off the hook for having produced Everton’s all-time worst look.
Because there are always gluttons for punishment out there, I’m here to help. If you can fit yourself into an Adult Small, this shirt is available for you. Ebay has an auction ending tomorrow morning which at his time has no bids. Unbelievable, I know, but for just 10 quid plus shipping, this shirt can be yours! Good luck, and send along a picture if you actually buy it.
