  1. Ryan

As expected, our boy Jozy is starting for Hull v. Southend United today.

  2. Lingering Bursitis

I saw that! The lineup has him and Fagan up-front

  3. Georger

That is the ugliest 2500 dollar jacket ever made.

  4. phil

I would spit on myself if I ever wore a jacket like that.

  5. Ryan

And a Panathanaikos OG effectively hands the tie to Atletico, up 4-2 now, with 3 away goals.

  6. phil

Jozy starting! Phil Brown figured it out quicker than Bob Bradley. One more reason to say: BRADLEY OUT!

  7. Georger

Lot of empty seats at the Calderon, shame on you Atletico fans.

  8. Highbury Library

FWIW, American Mike Grella is starting for Leeds against Watford.

  9. Ryan

Hull scores, but it wasn’t Jozy so I don’t give crap.
Anyways, Tom Cairney scores from 20 yards out to put Hull on top.

  10. Highbury Library

Hull up 1-0 through some dickbag not named Jozy.

  11. Will Lyon put up another 5-spot on Anderlecht? Stay tuned!

  12. ebullientfatalist

Maccabi Haifa!!! Salzburg!!! Who will be standing after the anschluss?!

  13. Georger

Do Arsenal fans wish they still had Gilberto?

  14. Lingering Bursitis

    Dunn scores for Blackburn

  15. Lingering Bursitis

    and yes, Georger, they do

  16. Georger

Why does every club with vertical stripes now have a blank spot where the number is? Is there some new rule that says you have to have the number unobstructed? It ruins these kits.

  17. Lingering Bursitis

0-0 in the Tranmere/Bolton tilt, aka Fat Sam v. The LFC Spice Boys (Barnes and McAteer)

  18. Lingering Bursitis

(though technically Barnes pre-dates the Spice Boys)

  19. Lingering Bursitis

Pisswich take a 1-0 lead on the road @ Peterborough, thanks to Tomas Priskin (or Pisskin)

  20. Georger

God Leto and Cisse are playing together for Panpizza, this is like a clinic on failed LFC players.

  21. Ryan

Have to say, I’m really impressed by the quality of the Maccabi pitch. I was expecting a bombed out stadium with turf or something.

  22. ebullientfatalist

    We have a zombie announcer in the Haifa-S’burg match. Could . . . he . . . please . . . speak . . . a . . . little . . . faster . . .?

  23. @LB – don’t speak for us! Personally, I would still like to have Gilberto.

  24. Georger

The side boards at Calderon are way too close to the touchline, Ujfaluši just damn near racked himself on it.

  25. Georger

Are they actually playing in Israel? When we played them three years ago we had to play the away leg in Kiev because Israel was such a mess.

  26. Lingering Bursitis

Piquionne scores for Pompey on his full debut…

  27. Ryan

Apparently it’s the National Team stadium, the Ramat-Gan, only FIFA approved stadium in Israel.

  28. ebullientfatalist

The game is taking place in Palest-, er, Isreal.

  29. ebullientfatalist

    or Israel. Either/or.

  30. Georger

Panathinaikos are off the swarthiness chart.

  31. Georger

ESPN not providing even automated gamecasts for these games. Good to see they’re not being snotty about losing the rights.

  32. Highbury Library

Millwall take a 1-0 lead at Upton Park

  33. Highbury Library

    Holy timestamp, Batman!

  34. Ryan

Haifa score, like the annnouncer just mentioned though, doesn’t really change what Salzburg have to do. Still need 2 goals.

  35. Ryan

Major violence outside Upton Park, BBC 5 Live are reporting. Not sure what exactly that means

  36. ü75

    Green Street 3 filming?

  37. ebullientfatalist

Haifa fans are up for this match, good for them.

I’m off for an afternoon of “There Will Be Blood” in HD. Is there a open-thread for that?

  38. Ryan

Jozy just scored from 25 yards out, because Jozy Altidore is a man!

  39. 3-0 Lyon already, on a hattie from Lisandro Lopez.

And West Ham is playing Millwall in the Milk Cup? That’s a recipe for disaster.

  40. Goat

Maybe they should go back to calling it the Milk Cup. There can’t be any violence surrounding something called the Milk Cup, can there?

  41. Georger

“There can’t be any violence surrounding something called the Milk Cup, can there”

Having seen Inglorious Basterds this weekend, a cup of milk can be the forerunner to a bloodbath.

  42. Quack, Qu-brrcckkk. Jozy killing ducks.

  43. Eladio

Where’s Frodo when you need him…

  44. Lingering Bursitis

    @Goat @NYK

But then the Hammers and Millwall fans would be crying over spilt milk, wouldn’t they?

  45. Goat

    Way to go, Jerzy.

  46. Goat

How about the Fluffy Puppies and Kittens Board sponsor the league cup, then?

  47. Ryan

Haifa are going to the group stages, the appropriately named Golaso scores on a deflected shot from 20 yards out.

  48. Eladio

So does Pompey celebrate their first win of the season? Or just know that they’re still s**te — just better than one of the worst teams in League 2?

  49. Ryan

Maybe Pompey will fire Paul Hart now. Firing managers after big League Cup wins seems to be in style this season.

  50. Eladio

Also, because I actually look these things up, based on today’s CL projected winners (based on 78% of precincts reporting), here are the team’s UEFA coefficient, which determines which “pot” they’ll be in for the Group Stage draw on Thursday.

Lyon – 91.033 (As long as Arsenal goes through, Lyon is guaranteed no better than 9th, so that’s the 2nd pot)
    Atletico Madrid – 41.853 (Approx. 22nd, 3rd pot)
    Debrecen – 1.633 (easily 32nd — 4th pot)
    FC Zurich — 14.05 (4th pot)
    Maccabi Haifa — 17.05 (4th pot)

  51. Eladio

Here’s the link to the UEFA CL team coefficients.

    http://www.uefa.com/competitions/ucl/format/newsid=837576.html

  52. WhiteSpeedReceiver

Live it up, Pompey. It might be the only win you get this year.

  53. Ryan

Wolfsburg would be a hell of a team to draw from pot 3

  54. Eladio

@Ryan: believe it or not, Wolfsburg will probably be in Pot 4. The only way they wouldn’t be is if 2 of the following 3 teams win their ties tomorrow: Timisoara; Sheriff Tiraspol; Apoel Nicossia.

That would push Wolfsburg up to 24th out of 32 teams. Otherwise, they’re in pot 4.

  55. Eladio

no idea if this will format well, but my guess on the 32 group stage teams, and their coefficients. I’m assuming that Pot 1 are teams 1-8, pot 2 is 9-16, etc. Of course I could always read the 42 page document on their website to determine the seeding rules for the group draw. But then I wouldn’t get any real work done.
    —Group Stage Teams——–Coefficient
    1 Barcelona 121.853
    2 Liverpool 118.899
    3 Chelsea 118.899
    4 Man United 111.899
    5 Sevilla 110.853
    6 AC Milan 110.582
    7 Arsenal 106.899
    8 Bayern Munich 98.339
    9 Lyon 91.033
    10 Inter Milan 87.582
    11 Real Madrid 78.853
    12 CSKA Moscow 71.525
    13 Porto 68.292
    14 Sporting Lisbon 68.292
    15 AZ Alkmaar 64.826
    16 Juventus 63.582
    17 Rangers 56.575
    18 Olympiacos 52.633
    19 Marseille 48.033
    20 Dynamo Kyiv 46.37
    21 Stuttgart 45.339
    22 Atletico Madrid 41.853
    23 Bordeaux 40.033
    24 Besiktas 32.445
    25 FC København 26.89
    26 Wolfsburg 21.339
    27 Standard Liege 21.065
    28 Maccabi Haifa FC 17.05
    29 FC Zürich 14.05
    30 Rubin Kazan 9.525
    31 Unirea Urziceni 8.781
    32 Debrecen 1.633

  56. Ryan

Wow. So there’s a shot (1 in 4096, but still) that one of the CL groups shakes out with
    Chelsea, Real, Bordeaux, and Wolfsburg

  57. Eladio

(Who got me going on the CL anyway?)

Based on those figures, my group of death:
    Chelsea
    Real Madrid
    Bordeaux
    Wolfsburg

    Arsenal’s best hope:
    Arsenal
    AZ Alkmaar
    Besiktas
    Debrecen

One could argue CSKA Moscow over Alkmaar, but no one wants to play a meaningful game in Russia in Nov/Dec.

  58. Eladio

    Great minds think alike…

  59. spectator

Just like to say that I’ve seen my beloved Exeter beat Hereford, so if Pompey couldn’t manage it today then they are indeed in dire straits.

  60. Ryan

Twitter news, so grain of salt, but apparently West Ham- Milwall was suspended after a 2nd pitch invasion

  61. WhiteSpeedReceiver

Eladio, so with one change (Fiorentina winning) I get a much prettier group stage: Liverpool, Inter, Marsaille, and Wolfsburg.

  62. teeknuts

According to the guardian some guy got stabbed outside Upton Park.

  63. MCR

The Guardian has Everton buying Sylvain Distin, but doesn’t mention Senderos. Gaaaah. I want closure.

  64. hockalees

    Re: Riots at Upton Park

How is Steven Cohen going to blame this on Liverpool supporters? Discuss.

  65. MCR

I contend that Liverpool supporters will blame it on Steven Cohen.

  66. Matt Alford

The jacket is gortex! You should quit hatin! If it’s good enough for Costanza a decade and a half ago it’s good enough for a 22 yr-old Spanish millionaire today.

  67. ü75

I don’t know about anyone else, but I just hated that it did not zip up straight.
