Dennis Bergkamp: still got it

Around these parts, one thing our bickering, multi-team collective can agree on is a shared love for Dennis Bergkamp. Whether at Ajax, Arsenal, or in the orange of Holland, DB could rarely score an ugly goal.

He’s still kicking around in the Ajax Seniors team, alongside other vets like Shota Arveladze (anyone remember him? Played for Ajax, AZ Alkmaar, Rangers?), Aron Winter (Lazio, etc) and Glenn frickin’ Helder (Arsenal, Benfica), and the other night, he scored yet another gorgeous, gorgeous goal against “De Kennemers III”.

Just watch the vid. It’s Berg-tastic.

Casual, insouciant, effortless. The man never liked traveling via plane, but he could sure manipulate the flight of a soccer ball.

    Paging Joep Smeets to translate….
I love how he turns around and is walking away before it even goes in.

Goat – it’s the classic DB swagger, right? No need to double-check, that shit is in the net.

If it was any other player, I’d call it arrogant. Not Bergkamp though.

Time to dig out disc 1 of my Arsenal: Centurions DVD… the Dutch Master indeed. And it doesn’t include one of my favorite Bergkamp moments…

“DENNISH BERCHKAMP! DENNISH BERCHKAMP! DENNISH BERCHKAMP! DENNISH BERCHKAMP! DENNISH BERCHKAMP! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!”

For that matter… if you have 6:30 minutes to reminisce about the pure brilliance of the player. I love the clips where you see him just raise his hand ever so briefly to call for the ball… boy did he know what to do with it when it found him.

Some goals you can see coming from a mile away but he seemed to have a knack for scoring in situations when the defense didn’t seem particularly troubled and making it look easy. If that makes sense.

@Hockalees: I watch the “Magic Moment” vid anytime I need to pick up my day. I’ll never be able to do anything as good as Bergkamp was at scoring goals.
