The Good, The Bad, The WTF
The thing about Shrewsbury Town as a club is that they are most famous for being a shirt in a movie. And it’s not even a movie that was popular when it came out. Instead, this movie is merely a cult classic. Of course, I’m talking about This Is Spinal Tap.
You can see it right there from the placeholder image in the video. The shirt that Derek Smalls is wearing around the 25 second mark (right before he has to remove the foil-wrapped cuke from his pants) is a Shrewsbury Town shirt from 1981 or so. It’s a rather nice effort which is instantly recognizable and not in any way bothersome.
So, nothing like the effort the club wore barely a decade down the line.

Holy cow. Talk about a mess. Everything gets lost on this shirt, especially when you only see a thumbnail. What could you possibly make out from that look? You definitely cannot see the team’s badge, while the sponsor gets lost in the muddle as well. Who the heck came up with this?
Well, the shirt’s manufacturer by this time was no longer Umbro, the company who made the Spinal Tap special up above. Nope, instead this was made by a company with the initials “STFC”. So some genius at the club came up with this design then. This was the home shirt for the year 1992-93, Shrewsbury Town’s first season in the old fourth division since 1975. Sadly, they only wore this shirt for one year, abandoning it before winning that league the next season.
But enough about the club. This post should end as it began–with Spinal Tap. Here’s a poorly compressed video of Rob Reiner’s plea to owners to put his directorial debut into their theaters. If you find This Is Spinal Tap funny, then this should be up your alley. If not, just skip it and we’ll see you tomorrow.

I think I threw up something in college that looked like that shirt.
None more black.
Jeez. A warning please next time. That shirt is an optical illusion, and it’s huge. I got vertigo looking at it.
The warning is the recurring title of the column. If you’ve seen it before, you know there are horrors within. Your concern is like going to Fleshbot and worrying about it being NSFW.
Sorry, just been reading the FJM stuff on Deadspin.
Yeah, but it was such an expectedly big picture.
Can I raise a practical question at this point? Are we gonna do “Stonehenge” tomorrow?
Grant Holt scored 28 goals for the Shrews last season before we bought him. Get In Holty!
