Damn German Nihilists

Tomatoes for the Cabrese salad?

Tomatoes for the Cabrese salad?

Roman Weidenfeller, Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, was attacked by savages in a pizza bar yesterday.  Weidenfeller and a friend stopped in to a Vapiano restaurant (sort of an upscale/trendy Italian chain restaurant) in inner Dortmund yesterday (perhaps to catch a bite before Champions League action?) for a quick meal.  Weidenfeller says he only wanted a salad when five German nihilists* (*I presume but may not have been German nor nihilists) came in attacked him and his friend.  Presumably, the Nihilists  did not take kindly to his Cabrese salad order.

But by the grace of his “quick reflexes” was Weidenfeller able to avoid serious injury.  His friend was not so lucky, probably because his reflexes were not quick enough for him to run and hide while his buddy took the punishment.  He ended up in the hospital after suffering facial injuries.

Coincidentally, or maybe not, Borussia Dortmund lost to bitter rivals Schalke 04 last Saturday 1-0.   Maybe this was not about a Cobb salad order.

This is not the first time Weidenfeller has found himself as a central character in a scandal.  In 2007, he was fined and suspended for allegedly hurling racial slurs at striker Gerald Asamoah of rival Schalke.   Weidenfeller denies ever making the slurs, although he did apologize.  (Sports figures’ apologies are the same the world over apologize but do not accept blame.)
