US v. Costa Rica Open Thread

Thinking of Charlie

Thinking of Charlie

Thoughts tonight will be with Charlie Davies as his teammates come out on the RFK pitch against Costa Rica with thoughts of winning the Hex. The starting lineup for the USMNT:

GK: Howard (Timmay!)
DEF: Bornstein, Bocanegra, Onyewu, Cherundulo
MID: Donovan, Bradley, Feilhaber, Holden
ST: Casey, Altidore
Subs: Guzan, Conrad, Torres, Rogers, Cooper, Spector, Clark

C’mon in and talk about the boys!

Not a good night so far: Argentina qualify amid shenanigans, and now the boys are down 0-2 to the Ticos.

Jean-Luc wants to know what is going on around here.

re: US match, Bob Ley says two yellows or red carry over to WC… Wouldn’t that be applied to the next int’l match? Doesn’t get applied in a int’l friendly? (i.e. WC warmup matches)

  2. cjdomer04

I don’t think so, Sven. I think, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, ESPN got something right about footie.

  3. @cj – don’t be silly

  4. Ryan

Anything that warrants a suspension (reds, two yellows, stuff after the fact) carries over to the World Cup. The lineup is fine, really wanted to see Torres get a start though. 2nd game in a row that Ching doesn’t make the bench, either he’s hurt, or maybe he’s fallen out of favor.

  5. sven

    Uruguay go a man down.

  6. sven

and Argentina goal after a ping-pong from the ensuing free kick.

    Book it.

  7. cjdomer04

    Maradona = genius.

  8. sven

Did Harkes just say the USMNT put “the knife in the coffin” down in Honduras?

  9. Goat

If Torres doesn’t see the field, Ima be pissed. That’s not quite as bad as Georger coming out of the booth, but still.

  10. sven

The US looks up for it.

  11. 9th minute soon – fans supposed to hold up the #9 for Charlie

  12. jgaugust

    Conor Casey everyone!

  13. Conor Casey f**king bottled it. What a nonce.

And Greg Lalas wants me to love the bald oaf.

  14. jjf3

and that is why Conor Casey still sucks, 2 goals in Honduras or no…

  15. sven

THAT is why Casey is not a int’l caliber player.

That goal would have been in the 9th minute too.

Way to blow the tribute, Connor.

  16. Goat

Can we start s**tting on Casey again?

  17. EllisCarver

And……we’re back to hating Conor Casey.

  18. EllisCarver

    And…..Howard is still a Don.

  19. Highbury Library

    TIMMMMMAAAAYY!

  20. jgaugust

@Ellis: When did we ever stop?

  21. phil

    F**king Conor Casey.

  22. @sven – good point. Casey f**ked up the tribute goal.

And TIMMAY is a f**king cat.

  23. jgaugust

Timmay is the f**king man. End of story.

  24. Highbury Library

    F**king Central American pussies.

  25. Highbury Library

I blame Phil Brown for that Jozy miss. Regular pitch time and he puts that in.

  26. I enjoy Holden’s play, but not his spiky hair.

  27. J

The US gets too impatient when the centerbacks have the ball in their half. They make a couple of easy passes and then boot it forward.

  28. I’m gonna punch Conor Casey in the balls.

  29. Highbury Library

F**K YOU CASEY! YOUR SHITHEADEDNESS LED TO THAT GOAL!

  30. sven

Gooch… that one is on you.

    You stabbed AND got beat.

  31. jgaugust

Good strength there. Very surprised that happened around Gooch.

  32. ooh, thats all on Gooch

  33. Highbury Library

Also, Gooch needs pitch time or we’re f**ked in SA.

  34. DAMN YOU, STEVE McCLAREN!

  35. jgaugust

    Wow. Nice shot.

  36. well f**k me in the pants

  37. jjf3

this is going, um, not well…

  38. Highbury Library

WHAT THE F**K IS THIS SHIT?

  39. sven

    Quite the CD tribute, boys.

  40. phil

    I think it’s that time:

    BRADLEY OUT!

  41. Highbury Library

Now would be a good time to protect yourself from any neighboring Hondurans.

  42. cjdomer04

and Costa Ricans, for that matter.

  43. sven

Alright, let’s not suck Lando’s dick over the free-kick in Honduras… it was good, but it wasn’t THAT great.

  44. jgaugust

That was a beautiful move and not the right finish. Good play though.

  45. Highbury Library

Can any of these f**ks put the ball in the GD net?

  46. EllisCarver

@sven Funny you say that about Lando…

  47. J

Two 1 v 1 on the goalie and two blasted over the bar.

  48. sven

@Ellis and Lando immediately says “No, please! Go ahead!”

  49. we are dire in front of goal tonight

  50. Highbury Library

F**k me. I can’t take this s**t anymore. I get enough missed opportunities watching Arsenal.

  51. J

It is just not their night thus far.

  52. phil

    This is shambolic finishing.

  53. sven

Funny they should be so f**king worried about Jozy getting a second yellow. If Bradley thinks of him as such a great asset (which he is), then why didn’t he start vs. Honduras?

  54. Ryan

US to win 3-2, we’ve had more than enough chances.

  55. teeknuts

Just got back from seeing Zombieland, is the 0-2 score a fair one or are we just unlucky?

  56. phil

    Really thought that was a lead-in for a USMNT-zombie joke, teek….

  57. Ryan

@teek Defense shambolic as always. Casey and Donovan both screwed up 1 v 1s. Bunch of other half and full chances for the US. I’d say it’s relatively fair.

  58. teeknuts

Well, that would be something a clever person would do. Alas, that’s not me.

  59. jjf3

UEFA note: per BBC scribe (if true), Portugal, France, Russia and Greece get the 4 “seeds”, which leaves Ireland, Bosnia, Slovenia and Ukraine slightly screwed. Though I would still like my chances against France and Greece (and maybe Le Dive isn’t healthy for an opening game in Portugal?)…

  60. teeknuts

    Oh f**k you Connor Casey.

  61. phil

So is Ireland out of WC 2010?

  62. jjf3

Correction: per soccernet scribe. Apologies, mixed up my open windows…
I don’t think Ireland is out, but that “last-minute” decision didn’t help them…

  63. EllisCarver

It’s amazing how quickly Casey screwed up all that momentum.

  64. teeknuts

It’s unfortunate how that banner looks like it says “Creaming Eagles.” Unfortunate and hilarious.

  65. wacman1389

it would be bradley on the end of a Bolton style goal

  66. jjf3

    Bradley steals one, about time…

  67. Robbie Rogers is having a go at some starting XI time

  68. wacman1389

nice job on the cameraman, staying in close for the patented “YOU SUCK ASSHOLE!”

  69. wacman1389

    Jozy- Great turn, Bad shot

  70. jjf3

    Jozy, Jozy, Jozy! Damn…

  71. teeknuts

If Phil Brown plays Jozy more that’s a goal. OK maybe not but f**k Phil Brown.

  72. Highbury Library

The sound you are hearing is the collective thud of people jumping off the Jozy bandwagon.

  73. Georger

He’s asking for it, SCREAMING FOR IT.

  74. @HL – DO NOT DISPARAGE THE HAITIAN SENSATION!

  75. wacman1389

Ruiz with the SLOWEST JOG POSSIBLE

  76. wacman1389

    Onyewu crocked

  77. WhiteSpeedReceiver

    Oh this is not good.

  78. teeknuts

    This can’t be good.

  79. Georger

Oh no what will Milan ever do …

  80. Highbury Library

    F**KKKKKKKKKK

  81. torn ACL for Gooch? doesn’t look good

  82. Georger

    Sprained MCL.

  83. Dan

What a s**tty corner that led to that.

  84. WhiteSpeedReceiver

@ Georger and MH: Continue to cheat and suck?

  85. jjf3

This game just became the absolute least of our problems…if that’s his knee, we’re f**ked…

  86. Georger

Did he just suggest, in the same sentence, that it’s bad to use all your subs early, but it’s fine because you can’t know what’s going to happen?

  87. Highbury Library

Why does God hate U.S. soccer?

  88. J

It looked like nothing, so it probably is something terrible. Torn ACL would not surprise me.

  89. Georger

Homeless guy on the sideline getting sent off.

  90. wacman1389

and now this is getting crazy…..

  91. @ HL: Clearly because God is an American.

  92. wacman1389

    LOL @ Georger

  93. phil

@HL: because Sunil interviewed God for the managerial opening, but decided Bob Bradley was the better candidate.

  94. teeknuts

    Well this is just…odd.

  95. Georger

Mexico wins the group if the results hold. Good job.

  96. Highbury Library

I haven’t really been paying attention. The hell was that all about?

  97. teeknuts

Now the Costa Rican John C. Reiley is managing the team.

  98. wacman1389

please tell bradley not to shoot anymore
