Quick Throw: More Soccer Violence

Apparently, this afternoon is when all the soccer and violence stories start rolling in. First, there was news of the French “riot” and then it was a “Clown” killing a soccer team in Colombia and now the violence is reaching the states. [Query: Does this mean the US is really becoming a footballing nation?]

In Freeport, Florida a poor referee was attacked by a mob of people at a soccer game on Sunday. The referee was chased around the field twice, cornered and ultimately locked himself in his car. All this needs is a Yakety Sax soundtrack.  Clearly, he didn’t subscribe to the Malaysian referee school of thought which requires you to blow the whistle while strapped. Also, could this have happened in any place other than Florida panhandle?

Meanwhile, in the Boston area on Sunday, a man killed his roommate when the two reportedly started arguing while watching a soccer game on TV. The suspect shot his roommate several times in the back and fled the scene. Police are still looking for the suspect who is considered armed and dangerous. No shit?

Can I go on record and say that Worcester is NOT Boston. I even watched the West Ham – Arsenal match with a Gooner friend. No shots were fired.

    duly noted.

Is there a reason that the News-Herald had to say that the melee occurred in an Hispanic League soccer match? Would they have referred to it as a Caucasian League soccer match if the players were all white?

    Fucking racist media.

I’m about halfway between Worcester and Boston, and on Sunday I forced my wife to go to the basement to watch the 1st half of the Patriots game, and the only thing fired was a hate stare. Which was dutifully returned when she came up and said, “They didn’t win???”

  5. On October 27, 2009 @ 17:23 The Fan's Attic says:

Not sure Eladio, but I do know that we have specifically Hispanic leagues in Oregon. So, it could actually be a Hispanic league.

Eladio, how is stating a fact racist?

  7. On October 27, 2009 @ 17:32 Eladio says:

If it is in fact a Hispanic league (as opposed to a league made up of Hispanics) than I retract my statement. But then a league that only allows Hispanics to play is racist, prejudicial, and fucked up as well.

  8. On October 27, 2009 @ 17:40 Eladio says:

Also, I have to say that just stating a fact doesn’t excuse it. For example: If any time a newspaper crime report printed that a crime suspect was black (when they were), but didn’t print a crime suspect was white (when they were), isn’t that a form of racism? Why do blacks, latinos, asians, etc always have to have a qualifier when being described?

Of course most people use the qualifier “certifiable douchebag” when referring to me, so not sure what’s worse.

2-0 Spurs, how’s that for a report of fact.

    Wut.

The Hispanic leagues here aren’t exclusively Hispanic in that they won’t allow a person of another ethnicity into the league. It’s more that they are set up by Hispanic people, recruit Hispanic players and mostly speak Spanish between the players and coaches, so it is more de facto Hispanic than de jure. If you are of another race and speak Spanish you could join I think. I never tried since I do not speak Spanish.

I wanna know what game they were watching! Was it a derby? Did the victim know his ‘friend’ was armed? Who watches a derby (note assumed derby-ness) with an armed member of the opposition?

    So many questions…

OT, but I encourage everyone to test their mettle by seeing how long they can put up with the audio from the Brazil-Mexico U-17 WC match from earlier today.

Some people need to be beaten about the head and shoulders with their brass instruments.

Funny you say that. Here I was thinking that it was all you non-Spurs fans who need the help. ;)

TFA’s description is accurate for the leagues in my area as well. Typically the Hispanic leagues in this area function outside the normal structure. The leagues are not governed by the state soccer association. I think it perfectly fair the paper describes the league as Hispanic so it doesn’t tar all soccer leagues with the same brush-just the one that is involved in this issue.

Mags: That’s exactly what I was thinking!

MUFC fan: “Red card to Carra”
LFC fan: “No, dive by L’il Micky”
    MUFC: Red card!
    LFC: Bang!

Obviously the LFC fan was the shooter in my scenario. Feel free to swap roles to taste.
