Yup, A Flamethrower

My eyes were not deceived yesterday. There was a giant flamethrower being wielded by an Algerian fan in the stands after the country’s 1-0 victory against Egypt securing a 2010 World Cup birth. Ok, maybe it was just an aerosol can and a lighter but it was a huge flame shot into the air.

American sports fans, you are on notice, just ask yourself “Why can’t us?”.

Video of the flamethrower can be seen at the 0:04 mark.

Just a couple other items of note in that video. First, see the press guy carrying an Algerian player on his shoulders? Awesome. It would be great to see Grant Wahl carrying Landon Donovan on his shoulders around the pitch after the US managed a momentous victory.

Second, the dog barking in the background at about the 1:18 mark. While watching the FIFA stream yesterday without any commentary, this one dog just started barking which stood in stark juxtaposition to the bedlam that was going on in the stadium. It was like there was a tragedy going on in the stadium and all hands were on deck leaving the solitary dog barking near the open mic as the world came down around him. Very eerie.

But, yeah, there was flamethrower in the stands. Seems security should have been looking for that.
