@Eladio — as I remember it, Wenger basically said, “yeah, that was b.s., we’ll be happy to have a replay” and Sheffield united accepted. The FA agreed to the replay immediately (honestly, the right thing to do given the circumstances).

I did a bit of research and apparently FIFA “looked into the situation.” Although it’s out of their perview as the FA chairman noted:

Best part of that article, for me, is the bit about Marc Overmars at the end, giving his jersey to the mascot (a sheff utd. players’ son) and apologizing for ruining his day. Stuff of legends there

This is an interview with Wenger from the BBC site. Right at the beginning he has perhaps the best quote: “I feel the biggest anger, for me, is that here we are in 2009, sitting here, where 2 billion people see what happened and one guy doesn’t see it and we cannot help him. And that is the most frustrating, with football being the most popular sport in the world and we are still having to endure this kind of mistakes.”

He also supports France allowing a replay “We want to beat Ireland properly, and we didn’t… it wasn’t a referee’s mistake, it was on misconduct on the fairplay side on our side.”

Question for those who were alive in 1999: When the famous Arsenal FA cup tie against Sheff Utd was won under dubious circumstances, with Kanu failing to give the ball back to the Blades after a throw-in (which came from an injury), Wenger called for a replay and they did end up playing the game again. I realize it would have been the English FA who would have awarded that replay; however, under what rules of the game could the FA have granted the replay?

What I’m getting at is that FIFA is saying “NO REPLAY” because their laws of the game state the referee didn’t see the penalty; therefore the game stands. In the Arsenal situation, what did the referee see/not see that allowed the FA to say, “sure, go ahead and replay it”?

Not sure if this question makes sense…if not, feel free to ignore me.

I completely embarrassed one of my students when his mom called him, and I explained to her that he was in class. I handed him back the phone and everyone could hear her yelling at him for being rude and having his phone on in class

@NYK, Sarah: The rule for one of my undergrad prof’s was: if your cell phone rings, she gets to answer it, and then you the student have to stand in front of class and have a conversation with whomever was calling.
