Monday Backpasses: Blame Bill Simmons

Seriously. Blame Bill Simmons
How the World Cup’s expansion has been good for the global game [When Saturday Comes]
How that damn team has replaced that damn guy’s goals [Republic of Mancunia]
Double shot of Elen Rives (NSFW, probs) [ONTD_FB] [Kickette]
ESPN’s soccer schedule for December [Football Fashion]
Celtic “supporters” do it again. What, exactly, is their aim? [PIES]

Finally:
Yes, this irks me personally. Gary McDonald scored a goal on Saturday to even up Aberdeen and Motherwell at one goal apiece in the 67th minute. He raised his shirt over his head to rub his belly as a tribute to his pregnant wife. He then recieved a second yellow card because of a new FIFA (Ned and I argue on this) enforcement directive saying that such a move is now cardable (it’s there, I checked). The problem is that NO ONE BOTHERED TO TELL THE CLUBS OR PLAYERS of the new wrinkle in the rule book [Aberdeen FC]

Burnley returns to the ESPN2 airwaves after far too long of an absence, plus a doubleshot of Pompey, no wonder Setanta went under.

Also, is the World Cup Draw really expected to last 3 hours?
Looking at it on ESPN360’s website, it appears they are offering two feeds of the draw, the ESPN feed, and the World feed. That’s not exactly going to be a tough choice.

@Ryan: But you get a Citeh game. I’m simply thankful for soccer in excellent HD.

It’s been a few years now that putting your shirt over your head gets you a yellow card, rubbing of the stomach I’ve never heard of. Of course I haven’t actually seen the video of this, but if you put your shirt over your head you get a card.

OH sorry I’m silly I saw the link. When I was taught this by FIFA they said covering your face with your shirt is a yellow card offense. This was years ago, so I don’t know what they’re talking about a new directive or not telling the clubs. This was in place years ago.

  5. On November 24, 2009 @ 00:40 Ryan says:

It must not have been enforced tightly though Dustin. I can think of countless instances where players pulled their shirt up to reveal messages or remembrances.

    @ef Noted. Pardon my whining.

@Ryan: I caught myself saying the same thing – “What? Pompey? . . . FUCKING TWICE?!?”

  7. On November 24, 2009 @ 01:24 Dustin says:

It must be an only USSF directive thing then, and that’s what I was taught.

Thanks for the info, Dustin. My feeling then is it was an enforcement directive that was not communicated to the teams. That is–tell the refs to watch out for something but don’t tell the teams that special attention is focusing on one part of the rule book. You see it in all sports–I remember special directives in both WC2006 and the U20WC2007–but those are always told to the teams and players beforehand.

It takes some time to work out the kinks. Until then, shit happens.

But you gotta tell the teams first.

As the right of each sentient species to live in accordance with its normal cultural evolution is considered sacred, no Starfleet personnel may interfere with the normal and healthy development of alien life and culture. Such interference includes introducing superior knowledge, strength, or technology to a world whose society is incapable of handling such advantages wisely. Starfleet personnel may not violate this Prime Directive, even to save their lives and/or their ship, unless they are acting to right an earlier violation or an accidental contamination of said culture. This directive takes precedence over any and all other considerations, and carries with it the highest moral obligation.

It’s coming from INSIDE YOUR HOUSE.

Dustin–can you email the UF address please? We have some questions to ask you about refereeing and who decides what gets enforced. Thanks.

Anyone else who is a certified ref please do so as well. Thank you.

I wonder if it has something to do with undershirts – revealing a message written on a shirt rather than bare skin? It seems stupid, but who knows?

It’s under Law 12 on the FIFA Website. I remember this being presented to us like 3-4 years ago. I can’t imagine that it wasn’t presented the same way everywhere. Maybe it just wasn’t enforced? I have no clue what the miscommunication is.

From what I know about rule adoption coaches and some referees participate in it, send in their suggestions on what they’re seeing with the changes in the game. FIFA has a committee that goes over that stuff and changes the Laws or implements directives accordingly.

That’s a great link Dustin. I’m probably going to read much of that over Thanksgiving break, maybe I’m just a nerd.
The taking your shirt off discussion starts on slide 51 for those interested.
I’m just curious why lifting up the jersey to show your chest is A-okay, but if it covers your head, that’s crossed the line.

I think because people will see it as making fun of the religious asshats who cover their faces and heads because some alien in the sky told them to.
Sure, it might sound stupid to you but probably so is killing someone for drawing a cartoon.
FIFA is just trying to prevent a violent response to what some might perceive as an insult. Everyone gets insulted by something these days.

It’s kinda like how FIFA requires sleeves because some female teams were playing without them and it was bothering people.
