Dear Pompey: Think Carefully. Love, UF.

So Paul Hart is gone, and is now maybe-or-maybe-not considering a technical director’s role at the club despite a spokesman noting he may have turned it down once before. With the bookies taking bets, one wonders who could be next for the least-wanted job in the EPL (a close second might well be any vacancy at Anfield).

Their favourite at the moment is fired/quit/just upped and left Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson. Let’s pause on that for a moment. I’m sure Portsmouth aren’t actually considering SAF’s son for the position, though imagine that: yet another Fergie in the league. I can expect United would roll over for young Daz in order to keep his team out of a relegation fight, but enough about glaring conflicts of interest. Darren has precious little experience, and judging from his handling of relegation woes in the Colaship, he’d be ill-equipped to drag the Fratton Park masses to safety against much flashier competition.

Avram Grant is on the shortlist, despite needing new work permits (though how can he be currently serving as their “Director of Football” without said permits?), and represents a much boring safer option. He did well at Chelsea, flair be damned, and deserves to restart his managerial career. As for other names on the bookies’ list, I’m sure some fools are dropping ducats on Guus Hiddink, Juande Ramos, Big Phil, and other guys currently lurching around, looking for some decent action. Zico, maybe?

One thing’s for certain: they had better take their time in making the appointment, as this will be the man charged with staving off a trip to the Colaship. At the very least, can they take more time in naming a new gaffer than they did in selling themselves to a Saudi businessman who admittedly doesn’t give a damn?
