More Monkeyshines in South Africa

Baboons are obviously anti-flag. Please keep that in mind when attending WC 2010.

Baboons are obviously anti-flag. Please keep that in mind when attending WC 2010.

As we continue our relentless coverage of all that can (and most likely will) go wrong in South Africa during World Cup 2010, feel free to add another menace to the list (currently populated by rampant crime and impoverished conditions). Monkeys will kick your ass. Not just any monkeys – gangs of angry/hungry baboons. Apparently the gangs of primates have become emboldened, and are now opening car doors to get at all of the goodies inside, be they sandwiches or your Bafana Bafana tickets. Of the approximately 400 baboons in 17 different gangs, the most notorious is a fellow known as “Fred”, who lead 28 of his mates in a raid on tourist vehicles in Simon’s Town. Scientists at the University of Cape Town are afraid that the influx of tourists during WC 2010 will lead to increased contact with the primates, who many tourists see as harmless and cute (cute? have you ever seen a baboons ass?).

So, when traveling to South Africa please remember: (1) be wary of carjackers; (2) do your American/European best to ignore the devastating poverty; and (3) don’t feed the baboons.

    I approve of this soccer-related furry-things post.

Imagine gangs of baboons who learn how to use vuvuzuelas

  4. @clementine: gah. that would be horrible.

  5. You could at least use the correct name when responding to out readers, The Fun Addict.

  6. @umlaut: that was on purpose and i wasn’t trying to “out” our readers.

  7. Hahaha we had to sit and watch them go through all our picnic lunch once. They jumped us as we opened the car. The baboons are only in certain areas so it’s safe.
