What a long strange trip its been

United States Soccer, not happy enough making small incremental gains in the local footy market, is branching out once again. Earlier this month seven clubs from the US and Canada split from the USL and picked up two more teams along the way. Today, they announced the NASL name.

The “New” NASL are spinning this as a “rebranding” effort and not a spat over money or recognition. Instead of one second division US Soccer league, there will now be two: USL-1 and NASL. They have no explanation on why they are better than MLS, other to vaguely talk about “Euorpean Style Soccer.” Instead, the MLS and NASL will be fighting for fans and marketing dollars.

“We are paying respect to the players, coaches and leaders who were pioneers for men’s professional soccer in North America,” newly appointed NASL president Selby Wellman said in a statement.

Maybe it should be not “paying respect” but “cheap marketing hack”. From doing my research, it seems like the MISLdid this by splitting into multiple leagues, before fading into oblivion. What do the new league owners think will come of this? Do they think they will crush the USL for not expanding fast enough? Will they feel they can co-exist peacefully? Sorry, but it is doubtful that you can co-exist, as consumers of soccer will get confused and just annoyed on this. Also, where is the US Soccer Association on this. This is a stupid move, and someone should hit these owners with a clue stick and push them in the right direction and back into the USL.

Besides, can we trust a guy named “Selby”?
