Spanish match-fixing scandal heats up

Faked, perhaps like the outcome of Spanish football matches

Faked, perhaps like the outcome of spanish football matches

Lost in the hoopla of breaking down the latest issue of Football and Gambling, here comes a story that will tickle those who are convinced that matches are altered. Reports are creeping out that Spanish Football players are under investigation. The Canadian story is reporting over 300 players are under suspicion and all four divisions of Spanish Football are being scrutinized. However, this story via Reuters (which I have not been able to find online yet), points to a smaller number of players.

There is only one upper echelon player on the list, goalkeeper Javier Lopez of Real Zaragoza. The other players are Francisco Suarez (Gramenet), Mario Gomez (Alcorcon), Juan Carlos Ceballos (Cordoba), Raul Lucha Hurtado (Amposta), Francisco Medina Luna (Rayo) and Javier Monteys (Gramenet).

Match fixing is a little tougher with team play, especially as the team size grows. Then again, I am looking forward to some weak investigations, and an equally Selig-esque presser from Sepp Blatter claiming that “FIFA is safe from fixing”.

Interesting. An Alcorcon player’s involved… wonder if Real players took any kickbacks for that utterly disenfranchising loss to the Spanish minnows in the Copa Del Rey…

    “FIFA is safe from fixing.”

    How appropriate.

@Anon: “Rest assured, gentlemen, that despite countless independent inquiries into and evidence of corruption, overwhelming public support for comprehensive reform, and repeated requests to do so, FIFA is safe from fixing. What’s this about gambling now?”

Too bad FIFA meets so infrequently… Their inanity is an endless source of posts!
