Walmart Strikes World Cup Gold.

TV. Check. Gun. Check. Soccer ball. Check.

TV. Check. Gun. Check. Soccer ball. Check.

Walmart is rubbing its hands together today as it bagged the mother of event merchandise deals.

Want anything branded with the World Cup name and logo next summer and you’ll have to go to Walmart. The exclusive deal with FIFA will mean that shirts, balls, lunchboxes, hell, probably even toilet paper will be available with the World Cup logo, and the badges of the national teams participating, on it. Which is great as I’ve always wanted to wipe my arse with the Argentina flag.

Now, many of you will be thinking that Walmart here in the old U.S of A will probably not make a killing as soccer is not a big sport, and you would be right, but Walmart owns many companies worldwide including Asda and this is where the ‘cha-ching’ register sounds will be heard.

Walmart’s deal is super news for FIFA head honcho, fat Sepp Blatter, who once again will pile the money he makes for doing nothing into the worlds largest warehouse. This deal is also good for the football punter as Walmart has a reputation of producing and selling items for low prices.

“It’s important that everyone gets the chance to enjoy the World Cup next year, that’s why we’ll be helping lower the price of the nation’s favourite tournament.”- Asda spokesman.

I look forward to the napkins, plates, cups etc brandishing the mighty St George’s Cross. Viewing party at my place, come on over.

“he exclusive deal with FIFA will mean that s**ts, balls…”

    hehehehehehe

  2. Norfolk Ned

    Never bought a s**t Georger?

  3. Georger

I’ve been paid seven dollars to take an upper decker, that’s close.

  4. Sarah

Worst idea ever. Walmart is an awful, hellish place.

  5. Bergkampesdios

So you’re saying I have to leave my urban oasis and head out somewhere into bumblef**k USA just to get soccer paraphenalia?

when did we enter bizarro world?

  6. Georger

Where else are they going to put it? Whole Foods or some douchebag vintage clothing shop in Manhattan that charges two hundred bucks a shirt?

    This is a great move.

  7. Will they sell replica kits, too? Because, honestly…I’d probably buy one if they did. That s**t’s hard as hell to find.

On the one hand, the kind of uppity white people that follow the USMNT probably don’t shop at WalMart. On the other hand, the really sizeable portion of the US population that watches soccer (read: hispanics) does shop at WalMart.

As an uppity white person, not a fan of this deal. As a capitalist, I can totally see it.

How about Target? I’m not asking for much here. I don’t even know where to find a Walmart.

Whole foods would be nice, too. or maybe the YES! organic market.

  10. Georger

Target’s market penetration (lol) is markedly smaller than Walmart, and as Bigus mentioned, Walmart has European subsidiaries.

Walmart is the world’s largest retailer. The WC is the world’s largest sporting event. Perfect match.

  11. Bergkampesdios

But Target is more convenient for ME.

  12. Norfolk Ned

@Bergkampesdios Everyone has a Walmart near them surely!
@Georger. Bigus is still dead. Not a day passes when I do not mourn my lost brother. Such a tragic event.

originally I was thinking…”yeah, still won’t get me into a walmart”…but then someone mentioned carrying replica kits which got me thinking they’ll have to be priced to cater to the walmart consumer. So one of you check it out and report back please.

you know about this already, right?

I’m with Georger. I think this is a great idea, it likely means cheaper merch too, which I’m all for (sorry sweatshop workers).

This article makes it sounds like it’s only select stores, I’m guessing Nowhere, Wisconsin won’t make that list. Now I’m slightly less pleased.

Click on that link, if nothing else just to read the “About FIFA” section.

So, I have to tell you all something that may revolutionize the way you do your shopping henceforth. It’s this thing I, and Al Gore, like to call the Interwebs. And lookie, lookie here

  17. corky

Well, being in Texas, I’m sure I’ll have a sweet selection El Tri jerseys to choose from!

Great idea by FIFA, but going to Wal-Mart is a hellish experience.

  18. damn….the closest walmart is about 45 minutes away. the closest target…15 minutes. they don’t like wal-mart in portland.

  19. Goat

I gotta move to Portland. Closest Walmart in Lynchburg–10 minutes. Future site of closet Walmart–less than 5.

  20. just looked…there isn’t a single Wal-Mart on the West side of Portland proper. There is one on the east side in Portland proper and two in suburbs on the east side. I live on the west side.
