French Footy Tidbits

Phil, look away!
Phil, look away!

One of the original postponed swine flu matches took place on Wednesday, with Paris Saint-Germain romping 5-2 over Boulogne Cote d’Opale (the other match, between Marseille and Sochaux, was re-postponed to December 10th due to L’OM’s Champions League match). After a stunning 35-yard strike from Ducatel put Boulogne into the lead, PSG gaffer Antoine Kombouare regrouped at the half by substituting Peggy Luyindula for Ludovic Giuly. The former then had 2 assists and a goal (on a PK) within the next 10 minutes, as PSG scored 4 total in that time. Boulogne got a goal back on a PK in the 82nd minute, but Maurice scored for PSG in the 86th minute to cement the 3 points and move PSG into 7th in the table.

Jeff Cunningham, MLS-leading scorer from FC Dallas, has joined Ligue 1 surprise AJ Auxerre for training. Apparently this is merely an attempt to maintain fitness while waiting for the USMNT camp (in preparation for WC 2010) to start in January. But let the rumours of Cunningham to Auxerre begin!

Zinedine Zidane will be visiting the Gaza Strip in March in order to promote peace in the Middle East. I’ll be really impressed if he brings Tal ben Haim, Yossi Benayoun and Amr Zaki with him.

Karim Benzema was so upset at Real Madrid’s loss in El Clasico this past weekend that he got into an automobile accident on his way home from the match. Reports indicate that airbags on his Audi were deployed despite the collision occurring at less than 30 mph. Tiger Woods is confused as to how this is possible.
