Seeing how UF is basically a spin-off from Deadspin (we were mostly commenters from back in the day), it’s probably safe to say we have always been fans of Rick Chandler, who was Abbott to Leitch’s Costello.
We’re not even sure if that makes sense.
Anyway, he’s manning the helm at an NBC blog called Out of Bounds. He was also nice enough to ask us help him with the World Cup draw because he knows nothing about soccer. We were happy to help out. I think my account survived the Great Commentariat Purge, but I haven’t been back since. For the most part, since Leitch moved to greener pastures, Deadspin sucked balls. His column and Drew’s, plus the occasional soccer post, were all I read. The rest was worse than what we got when Balk posted everything.
The difference is in the tone. When Leitch was in charge, even the salacious stories were presented with an air of “hey this happened. Isn’t it kinda funny?” largely due to the fact that Will was glad to be free of the sports media complex. Daulerio, though, seems to be trying to prove to every editor that dustbinned his resume that he’s an awesome investigative reporter, despite the fact that he uses tactics that would make Joe Pulitzer, Col Allen and the paparazzi that were tailing Diana of Wales blush. And that bitterness and schadenfreude makes DS a lot less fun. AJ’s much better as a support staffer than the main editorial voice.
AJ’s also kinda a douche, and was the worst writer on the site before he started bringing in assistants, none of whom were as funny or entertaining as they thought they were.
