Newcastle United: A Lesson in Rolling With The Punches

Andy Carroll: fighter, not a lover
Andy Carroll: fighter, not a lover

If you’re a Magpies fan, odds are you’re rather happy with the 2009/10 season thus far. First off, you’re in an unfamiliar league position: first place. Winning games every week is not something the kindly, rotund faithful have witnessed at St James’ Park Sportsdirect.com @ St. James’ Park for quite some time. And yet, they simply can’t be allowed to have fun; news hit this morning that striker Andy Carroll had been arrested on suspicion of spilling some claret at a nightclub.

Quote a Northumbria Police spokeswoman: “Shortly after 1.30am today, police received reports of an assault at Blu Bambu, Bigg Market, Newcastle. A man suffered head injuries which are not described as life-threatening. He was taken to Newcastle General Hospital and later discharged. A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.”

It appears that Joey Barton has rubbed off on the impressionable young Magpies, and it’s a shame too; Carroll has established himself in the first-team mix this season, and with caps at the England U-21 level, could keep improving and become a full international. I’m sure manager Chris Hughton will take action and sort things internally also, but for the time being, Carroll’s in the doghouse while his club are top dogs.

On a lighter note, it appears that Mike Ashley is to put the club back on the market, which can only be a curative measure to give the fans hope. The quicker that loudmouth clown is run out of office, the better for all concerned. Rough with the smooth, Magpies. Rough with the smooth.
