Eritrean National Team Reserves Now Happiest People In Eritrea

Such poor losers, twelve members of the Eritrean football team decided not to go home after the team was beaten by Tanzania in the quarter finals of a regional tournament being held in Kenya.

Or maybe the fact that nobody wants to go home to Eritrea has more to do with it. From the wire report: “The United Nations estimates that tens of thousands fled Eritrea in 2009, where analysts say a culture of mandatory national service has disaffected a generation of young people.” With a population of only 5 million, it produces a ridiculous number of refugees for a country not currently known as ‘war-torn.’

The team failed to show up at the airport in Nairobi on Saturday when they were due to return home.

Last October Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki said the thousands leaving the country were simply “going for a picnic.” Liar! Everyone knows there is no food in Kenya.
