Hugh Grant Calls US Soccer Girly

Girly Hugh.
Girly Hugh.

Appearing on The Daily Show last night, Hugh Grant took a few good shots at US soccer as noted former soccer player Jon Stewart asked Grant about the impending battle between former Empire and former colony in the opening match of Group C in World Cup 2010.

Stewart brought up the one thing in soccer American fans cling to, the 1950 1-0 World Cup victory over England by the Americans (goal scored by Joe Gaetjens). Grant thought the victory occurred in 1962, but Stewart, noted historian he is, corrected him. Afterwards, Grant’s riposte was calling US soccer girly.

Anyway, video below after the jump…soccer discussion starts at about 2:20. (Warning, some readers have noted that the video is making their Firefox browser crash until they removed UF from their Noscript permissions. I have no idea what this means.)

That embedded video made my browser (Firefox) crash until I removed UF from my NoScript permissions. :(

  • The Fan's Attic says:

Hmm. I have no idea what the means other than your browser wouldn’t load. I blame Hugh Grant.

    something about pots and kettles.

Noscript is a plugin for Firefox that basically prevents websites from running scripts until you give them permission to do so (either temporarily or permanently by adding them to a permissions list). It’s handy.

It’s probably just me. I just recently installed Snow Leopard on my Mac, and I’ve been having Firefox problems ever since. :/

I don’t know what qualifies Mr. Grant as a football analyst, but he certainly can speak to what sucks about America.

[You can probably remove that warning, unless other people were having the same problem. I fixed the problem I was having, and it works for me w/o dying killing my browser, now. There was some issue w/ corrupt font caches causing Firefox stability problems for new Snow Leopard upgradees. [Which also means that I can finally go to uefa.com w/o instant browser-death.]]

The only thin girly around here is the roles Hugh Grant plays… check out Four Weddings and a Funeral or whatever other rubbish he can get into.

  • DC says:

Jon Stewart played college soccer and he follows international football pretty well. he was right about it being 1950 too! “miracle on grass” people! hopefully more people will get hyped up about the WC, it is just too bad we may not have oguchi onyewu or charlie davies due to injuries. that changes the whole team.
