Finally Landy Cakes gets his chance
It’s official blog fiends, Landon Donovan’s short term loan to Everton is complete and the L.A Galaxy front man /wide man/ free role..er ‘man’ will join the Toffees on January 1.
Donovan (27) has had unsuccessful spells in Germany, leading to many critics (including me) to doubt his ability to perform at the highest level. But now the chance to prove his worth has arrived, and there is no better time as Everton’s injury issues should provide Donovan with plenty of playing time to impress.
The tiny forward has had quite an tasty season, starting with some very good perfomances in the Confederations Cup last summer helping America to a place in the final (and a meeting with Brazil) and ending with an appearance in the MLS Cup final, where the Galaxy lost to Real Salt Lake.
Donovan has definitely improved of late. His move to Everton will certainly test his talents and finally settle the many online debates over his ability, including this one in which the author suggests in the comments that Freddy Adu is ‘more accomplished’ than Donovan.
Of course, that’s simply nonsense; never has there been a player less accomplished that Freddy Adu– a guy who appears in the dictionary next to the entry for ‘hype’; he also appears next to ‘Overrated’, ‘disappointing’ and ‘who’? There really can be no comparisons between Adu, who specializes in riding the bench in Portugal and France (before being returned to sender) and Donovan, who is currently the USMNT’s captain and all time top scorer.
In fact I’ll go as far to say that my left testicle has accomplished more than Adu, as it once blocked a goal that would have lost my rec team a league match.
Back to Landy Cakes, Donovan has just re-signed with the Galaxy on a 4 year deal, guaranteeing him a salary of $1.2 million a year. One might go as far as to suggest that the timing of said new deal protects the MLS in the event that Mr. Donovan sets the EPL alight and Everton look to make his move a permanent arrangement.
Donovan will initially stay at Everton until March and I for one wish him the best of luck in the blue half of Liverpool and hope he proves me and many others wrong, as he is a thoroughly nice chap and deserves his shot.

Donovan can’t possibly have any higher motivation to perform well: he wants to get ready for the World Cup and to prove to European suitors that he’s viable. Assuming that Lando doesn’t crumple under the pressure and acclimates to Everton quickly, I’d reckon he’ll be a success.
(1) Let’s say, for the sake of saying, that Landycakes fails at Everton, thus proving all the doubters about him right. How does that affect his WC performance?
(2) Ned, did your left testicle parry the ball, or hang on to it?
@dmvdc
No idea, I was screaming like a little girl and trying to find it.
Does it really prove his doubters right? He was having a rough go at Leverkusen before the 2002 WC and was named outstanding young player of the tournament. I think it may speak to his inability to perform for a club when not living in Southern California, but not whether he can perform at the biggest stage. He’s most certainly done that for the national team.

That was me. Sorry to be so clandestine. New computer.
Well, he surely can’t be worse than Peter Crouch.
I hope he does well. And by “well” I mean “doesn’t suck.”
I hope he makes Timmay the second best american at Everton.
Donovan having a very good WC will do more for his reputation than three months at Goodison could possibly do.
