Bolivian Soccer Fans Apparently Without Sin

It’s Monday, so that must mean a soccer riot in Bolivia.

This is actually from almost 10 days ago, but really, once you find a soccer riot with a stoning in it, is it ever too late to post it?

Best we can tell this is Ciclon v. Wilstermann.

Wilstermann scored late to level the match at 1-1. So Ciclon fans responded in the only way rational South Americans would. They threw rocks at the visiting side’s players and supporters, then thinking they probably needed to get closer to inflict real damage, knocked down a fence separating the fans from the field before riot police quelled the crowd with tear gas.

Keeper Dennis Cartagena probably got the worst of it.

From posts here and here we’re guessing that Ciclon fans might have been totally justified in their actions as this was part of a two-legged promotion playoff between the sides. Unfortunately, Ciclon was unable to critically injure enough Wilstermann players as the latter won the home leg 2-1 to prevail 3-2 on aggregate.

But yes, they did play the return leg just three days after the above incident. Did we mention South American soccer is crazy?

We’d like to give some sort of award for understatement to the clip’s narrator: “This isn’t the first time that South American football’s been disgraced.” Or maybe it should be assumed that he’s talking about just today.
