- Capello: smart
You can never be too ready for a World Cup. While England’s men warmed up for Germany ‘06 by quaffing Riesling in Baden-Baden with their attractive brides, this go around will be quite different. For starters, Capello has scheduled a friendly with current ACN champs Egypt, inviting the club to Wembley in March.
All told, it’s a smart move by the Italian. The Egyptians have a similar playing style to Algeria, England’s Group C opponents, and should give a strong look as to what his side can expect from the North Africans.
In that vein, Capello is also trying to schedule a friendly with Mexico, who know the USA better than anyone, to ensure he’s covered all the bases. As for scouting Slovenia, the English played them and won 2-1 in a September friendly.
It’s so refreshing to have a competent England manager again. If only I could state the same about affairs at Liverpool…

I LOVE FABIO. That is all.
How exactly does playing Mexico help you prepare for the US? They play completely different styles and have dissimilar players. If they want a scouting report of the US they should just watch the matches.
@TFA So you think! Players are of a similar standard!
I love Fabio!
England should Mexico at the Azteca, I’d like to see a few of those guys deal with that environment.
Pretty sure Fabio could schedule Montserrat and Ned would find genius in it.
TFA: I’m sure Fabio can have a chat with the Mexican staff after the game and share notes.
How about Benitez or Sparky for USA gaffer in 2011?
Once he’s purged himself of the tapas he’s gorged himself on, he’ll discover Taco Bell and really get into the USMNT gig.
For what it’s worth, the Mexico friendly was rumored prior to the US drawing England, so while the skills of Mr. Capello are indeed immense, I’m not so sure the game is 100% about scouting.
