Megson Given The Boot At SFB

Megson was NOT popular in Bolton

Well it’s hardly a surprise is it? Stupid F**king Bolton have finally sacked Gary Megson.

One presumes for crimes against football, kinda…But its not just ‘boring’ tactics and ‘boring’ press conferences and making football (and everything Bolton) ’boring’ that led to Megson’s demise, its because he has achieved absolutely nothing while in charge.

Recent times have seen Bolton on a spectacular slide towards the Premier League trap door. Bolton have won just 2 home games this season, conceding a whopping 24 goals at the Reebok Stadium. That’s the most in the EPL. Bolton are currently 18th in the Premier League after a run of results that has seen the Trotters win just one game in their last 9.

It appears that yesterday’s late Christmas present to Phil Brown was the final nail in Megson’s coffin. Bolton were 2 nil up and cruising at home, only to give up the points as Hull came back to tie the game.

Megson took over from Sammy Lee in October 2007. After delivering survival, he was handed a decent amount of cash to build his side, blowing 8.2 million on Bolton’s most expensive player EVER, Johan Elmander. The Swede has scored just 12 goals in 44 appearances.  Big Sam Allardyce delivered two top ten finishes before leaving Bolton, yet Megson has managed 16th, 13th and leaves Bolton 3rd from bottom.

A common Megson pose.

A familiar Megson pose.

Megson was one of the most unpopular if not the most unpopular manager in the clubs history. He has criticized the fans and fallen out with his players. The first of those two issues usually guarantees the boot alone.

”I think Gary’s problem was the fans did not know him. In the two-and-bit years he has been there he didn’t once come to the supporters club and a lot of them seem to be glad now he has gone.” - Bolton Wanderers Supporters Association chairman Gareth Robinson.

Bolton’s chief farceur, Phil Gartside, will now be after a name to save Bolton from the drop.  The obvious choice would be Mark Hughes. Bolton is the same size club as Sparky’s previous home, Blackburn. But will he want to go to a team with little money to spend after having 200 million available at Manchester City?

The latest odds have Hughes at 3/1 while Curbishley is at 7/1 , Darren Ferguson at 10/1, Sven at 15/1 and Alan Shearer at 26/1.

My money is on Fergie Jr. Put me down for a tenner.

I gotta say, at least Megson had SFB playing somewhat attacking football this season… 26 goals scored, around midtable in the EPL in terms of goals scored. It’s the losses and goals conceded that doomed him, however.

That just makes them even more ‘SFB’. Gung ho with no defence.

  3. Bolton was actually on track to be BETTER after twenty games than they were this time last season. I know they hate Megson and all, but the exact reasons for that don’t exactly make sense. Do they really prefer Allardyce?

Well, Allardyce did play for Bolton for 7 seasons, winning a second division title during that time, and he did get SFB into the UEFA cup. Whereas Megson played there for like a year, and finished in the lower half of the table. So I could see why they’d prefer him.

I read that Steve McClaren’s name was being tossed about as a replacement as well. That would be fun.
