If football can cause war, than surely it can also cause world peace, even if accidentally.
Last week, the Iranian Football Federation’s director of foreign relations Mohammad Ali Ardebili emailed a new years greeting to all his counterparts around the world. The only problem was that the email was also sent to Israel, a country which Iran does not formally recognize.
After being contacted by a reporter from Israeli Army Radio, Ardebili said that the email was a mistake and promptly hung up the phone. But that did not stop his Israeli counterparts from sending a response: “Happy new year to all the good people of Iran. We also added a wink.”
For once, the proper use of an emoticon

Disgraceful.
;)
This was almost as bad as when Sunil Gulati tried to schedule that friendly with Margaritaville.
It’s only a matter of time until Iran and Israel meet in the World Cup. And when they do, we will see how football can bring even an ayatollah to his knees!
