UF Quick Throw: Dempsey goes down

Bad day for west London. Worse for America. Michael Essien seems to have crocked his knee real bad (went down without being touched, never a good sign), and now word from Fulham manager Roy Hodgson that Clint Dempsey has suffered “cruciate ligament damage.” Hopefully the doctor has a more appealing prognosis than the gaffer, who spoke after his side’s loss at Blackburn.

In case you forgot: The questionable/doubtful list for the USMNT for South Africa swells now to Onyewu (knee), Davies (arms, legs, etc.), Dempsey (knee), and probably Donovan soon, and someone else I’m surely forgetting…

It is ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE the injury curse we have suddenly been saddled with.

I have to be honest, I’m just totally gutted right now.

  2. If this is as bad as it sounds, I may not even watch the match on July 12.

This sucks. Feel really bad for Clint. His league form of late had been top-notch.

  4. what about the June 12 match?

  5. corky

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

  6. All we need is for Ricardo Clark to get a wrist injury after signing a new contract and Carlos Bocanegra to choke on snails while in France…

    someone else I’m surely forgetting…

    Jermaine Jones?

  8. phil

Actually, taking Bocanegra away from Bradley night actually make the side better.

The Deuce has been dropped. Oh well, Bradley only would have continued to get the least out of him.

  10. JUNE 12? Uh oh. Someone has to rearrange a family vacation.

@Elliot Boca’s unlikely to be hurt with his butt planted on a French’s teams bench.

Now it’s even more essential that Stu’s trial at SFB succeeds.

@beamish I’m unconvinced he ever actually existed as more than a figment of someone’s imagination.

One thing that does make me hopeful though, is whoever the wizards are at that training facility in Delaware, they sure seem a lot more competent than the fellas higher up the US Soccer ladder. Always seems to be good news coming out of that place.

    Boca, Edmundo Boca.

This sucks dong. If he’s out for six months or something I’m worried for Fulham too.

I think it was me. I’ve had feverous dreams of him stiff-arming his way through the English midfield.

Does DaMarcus Beasley count as someone on the questionable/doubtful list? I like to think of every mistake that he’s ever made as the result of nagging injury.

Love the quote from Hodgson: “The doctors are pretty good these days – I would like to see them to be wrong more often. Often their initial diagnosis appears to be the correct one when the scan is made.” F**k. At least Algeria still looks like s**t in the ACN.

I’m hoping for 3 months. Maybe he can get some rest for the WC. He was pretty worn down last year. He could use some time off.

Of all our players, he is the most likely one to bust his ass to make it back. I’m fervently looking on the bright side.

I know it’s stupid, but I really don’t think we’re in a position to care about match fitness. In my mind at least, If Clint, Charlie, and Gooch can run come mid-May, put them on the plane.

Please be a strain or sprain , if he’s out for a while i will be crushed beyond belief. That overhead kick was masterful, chest control of a corner ball never hits the ground and a rocket off the crossbar.

  19. [...] -Good news came out as I was writing this post for the US soccer team. Clint Dempsey hurt a ligament in a game for Fulham over in the Premier League that looked to be bad for the US in South Africa, but Fulham FC just put up a statement saying a scan found no operation is needed. Regardless, Dempsey is added to an growing injury list for the Yanks that include “Onyewu (knee), Davies (arms, legs, etc. ), Dempsey (knee), and probably Donovan soon”  (UnprofessionalFoul) [...]
