UF Quick Throw: Eidur Gudjohnsen To Spurs

He had a medical at West Ham but opted for Spurs instead.

Icelandic international and former Chelsea man, Eidur Gudjohnsen (31) is joining Tottenham on loan from Monaco until the end of the season.

However, West Ham are not happy at all:

“We thought we had a deal and the player had even had a medical. We then heard that Tottenham were trying to speak to the player. I can’t say I am happy about it but I believe in karma and what goes around, comes around.”- Karma or Karma Sutra?  West Ham Chairman and porno magnate, David Sullivan could be confused.

I say that knowing full well I’d probably rather Spammers have Gudjohnson than us.

  3. Defoe's a Yiddo

    Where does he fit in?

  4. Steve

This signing makes no sense to me. Why sign a guy who isn’t going to play? Going to try him out as a CB?

  5. Steve

I read one article that said they signed him as a replacement for Gio… huh?

  6. Norfolk Ned

@Steve, Oh he’ll play as soon as he proves fitness. While a flop at Barca (kinda) and a flop in France, he suits EPL football and was excellent at Chelsea.

  7. Steve

Who does he replace on the field, though? Jenas or Huddlestone I guess?

  8. phil

@Steve, Gudjohnson is a forward, not a mid. He’ll replace Pavs and Crouch as the frontman for Defoe and Keane to work off of…PAvs is likely gone in the next week or so.

  9. hadley

Why another striker? I don’t even think he’s better than Pavs. And he is older.

Anyway, I’m actually glad we didn’t splash a lot of cash for a guy who hasn’t been successful in a long time.

  10. Steve

I thought he could play some mid (more forward than Jenas or Huddlestone does), but that makes more sense.

@Hadley: Not better than Pavs, sure, but Gudjohnson is at least willing to you know, run and stuff. Pavs is a lazyass.

  12. phil

I do appreciate the fact that this is a loan deal. If Gudjohnson shows up and puts on a Crouch-esque display of inept forward play, it’s not like it means wasted transfer money.

  13. hadley

@phil – I honestly didn’t know that Pavs was lazy. And Spurs have more cash for wages and are in a much better place right now, so it all makes sense from Gudjonson’s POV.

@Hadley: all indications are that the reason ‘Arry’s been leaving him out of the starting XI is that he’s a jogger in practice. ‘Arry practically said as much after the Leeds match, and Pavs spent much of his first few weeks at Spurs bemoaning the pace of practice. And just watch him when he’s on the pitch. Even during EURO 2008, there were periods of Russia’s matches where you’d see him just standing around.

@phil – I do remember the Euro matches, but I really haven’t seen Spurs much this season. But Harry doesn’t stand for such petulance. It’s amazing to think that he wouldn’t hustle a little more for a chance to play in the best league in the world. What a wanker.

  16. phil

It’s been really disappointing, hadley. There’s no denying Pavs skill, but he just doesn’t seem to care. He wants to play without putting in his shift in practice. And, like you say, ‘Arry isn’t having any of that s**t.

In other former Chelsea striker news, Mutu failed another drug test: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/8485548.stm

whoops. umlaut beat me to it.

  19. Psst, Keith. ^^^^^ Next post up

Gudjohnsen plays deeper than Pav and will presumably be there to link the midfield to Defoe, much the same way Keane doesn’t. I’m skeptical that he’ll have anything more to offer, but for free it sounds like it could be worth a shot. At the very least, he’s always been willing to work hard, even if he may be past it.

I’m much more concerned about the rumors of Kaboul’s return. I haven’t seen much of Portsmouth lately, but unless he’s become exponentially better than he was at Spurs this is a horrible decision.
