Andres Iniesta Impregnates Half of Catalonia

And Now the Pitch is Preggers

Subtract nine from the last week of January and that puts you squarely on the right foot on Andres Iniesta and his rocket past Petr Cech. Huh?

The Barca midfielders’ goal against Chelsea put the Catalan side through to last year’s Champions League final where they toyed with an outclassed Manchester United squad to be crowned club champions of Europe en route to becoming the first side ever to win the sextuple.

It also led to rampant sextupling across the Catalan capital.

From Reuters: “Nine months since Barca’s 6-2 home win over their arch- rivals [Real Madrid] and Andres Iniesta’s stunning late strike which took them through to the final at the expense of Chelsea, maternity hospitals are struggling to cope with demand for beds.”

A local survey shows that births in Barcelona are up 50% (we’re going to guess that’s year-on-year) for the week of January 28, and anticipates a similar increase for next week (the first week of February).

On May 2 last year, Barcelona pummeled its league rivals Real Madrid to all but lock up the La Liga title. Then in midweek (May 6), they went to London and drew with Chelsea 1-1 to go through to the Champions League final on away goals. Count nine months forward, and that puts you pretty much right where we are in the calendar now.

“When we notice some sort of surge we look for the reason and it’s evident that the cause of the increase this week is the euphoria of Barca fans thanks to the huge win and Iniesta’s goal,” El Mundo quoted a Mercedes Rodriguez from the city’s Quiron Clinic.

Sure the 6-2 win was nice, but this boom is way cooler if it’s credited solely as the creation on the blaugrana’s midfield reverse vampire. Indeed in Barcelona, the babies are already being referred to as the Iniesta generation.

Insert joke about a surplus of beds in Manchester next February…

  2. Jape

Not to be too douchey, but I had a kid recently and human gestation is 40 weeks = 10 months.

  3. hadley

    Too douchey? This is Unprofessionalfoul.com!

Since when has a month (except Feb) been 28 days?

    40 x 7 = 280

    280 / 30.5* = 9.18, which is much closer to 9 than to 10.

(* splitting the difference between 30 and 31 days)

Also… from wikipedia: “The actual pregnancy duration is typically 38 weeks after conception”

  6. Jape

I knew we shouldn’t have used the midwife.

  7. Precious Roy

According to that same wikipedia link, the 40 weeks is from the last menstrual period. And since most women probably don’t get knocked up when they are menstruating you get the 38 number. I had no intention of learning this much about pregnancy. I just wanted to let people know that Iniesta got half of Barcelona pregnant.

  8. Jape

Wouldn’t that put it at 42 weeks with the most likely time to get pregnant mid-cycle? So that’s +2 weeks before the first missed?

Either way impressive feat by the young Spaniard.

Thirty-eight is mid-cycle (average). Go back two weeks to the last period and that gives you 40. That’s my math, but I’m a blogger so everything I type could be suspect.

You had me beat at the 9.18 months post. Ill buy you a pint at the World Cup Party.

Congrats, Jape. PR, I find your knowledge of pregnancy a little unsettling.

  12. Georger

Easy way to avoid this math, or any math really, is to pull out.

    Knowledge is power.

    Pull and pray FTW

    But really kids, use protection!

Tim Tebow says abstinence is the only way to avoid committing murder.

  15. Sarah

Tim Tebow can go cry in a corner.

And I’m pretty sure this thread is the most I have ever seen/heard guys talk about menstruation.
