Spirit Of 66?

The English FA have been responsible for some god awful England kits over the years but today I forgive them. Why? Because the new England away kit is pretty damn close to the classic (and adored) shirt worn by the World Cup wining side of 1966.

The new shirt will be unveiled today but images are already available at UMBRO’s website–although close ups from the shoot with the England players are not yet ready for close inspection.

The shirt looks just like the one worn by Booby Moore and co except for some white at the bottom of the sleeves and the UMBRO badge top right. It also looks as if it will be a tighter fit than the 66 shirt.

The return to the classic design is very welcome and hopefully wearing such a reminder to greatness will inspire the England team to success in South Africa this summer. Well, I can hope!

Picture after the jump.

Love it! The new England away shirt.

That’s really nice. I wish the US could do something understated for once.

  • bergkampesdios says:

    Classic. Very well done.

  • phil says:

Now the US will look even worse in their “Mayor Quimby Sash” shirt.

  • Clemantona says:

Will they, minus rooney, really need a long sleeved shirt in south africa

  • Ryan says:

It was pretty cold last summer for the Confederations Cup, they’ve even tossed about the possibility of snow at some of the higher elevations.

  • Norfolk Ned says:

@Clemantona Comes in short sleeve too.

  • Josh says:

The entire Umbro “tailored for…” (or whatever it’s called) line is really gorgeous. Man City is the only Prem team so far to have it, but a few teams in other leagues do, and I think they’ve said all EPL teams with Umbro will have it next season. All the kits are understated and really classic; it makes me wish Chelsea hadn’t ever signed with Adidas (well, this year’s home kit does that already, but…)

  • Ryan says:

I do really like the Umbro kits, City is rumored to be dropping them for Puma next year, which would be awful.

  • phil says:

Yes, stay away from Puma. What they did to Spurs’ kits this year was abominable.

  • Steve says:

Gorgeous jersey, something one wouldn’t mind wearing around.

  • spectator says:

    Dear US Soccer,

It’s four months before the World Cup and you still haven’t come out with your 2010-11 kits… Uh, please hurry up with that already.

    Thanks,
    Spectator

  • Norfolk Ned says:

    @Phil

Someone at Spurs approved those shirts. Maybe so the players can be seen when riding their bikes at night?

  • phil says:

@Ned: I figure it’s so when we piss down our legs in April no one will notice. Daniel Levy is no dummy. He’s seen this act before.

  • ebullientfatalist says:

Will it come with a “Walcott 14″ on the back? After Sunday’s un-display, I say no.

  • corky says:

Speaking of, when does Nike finally release all their WC kits? It’s about time.

  • Ryan says:

I think the US away kit gets released the day we play the Netherlands, no idea on the home one.

  • Georger says:

Gorgeous. It’s high time the jersey companies realized the people actually buying them in most cases should not be wearing form fitting sports material in public. There’s a reason I don’t buy jerseys, it’s because I refuse to be like the guy in the Rosicky jersey at the bar I goto for games that looks like a sack of basketballs covered with Saran Wrap.

  • Norfolk Ned says:

    @ebullientfatalist

Form can be sporadic for sure, but mine will say ‘SUPER FABIO’

  • jjf3 says:

Why can’t the US have some simple, consistent, recognizable style that looks classic??? Is that too much to fucking ask?

    /fuck you Nike!
