The Benin Football Federation is so unhappy with the African country’s performance at the African Nations Cup that they have fired EVERYONE.
By everyone, I mean EVERYONE. Players and coaches. A bit harsh no? All 23 squirrels (team nickname–no really) and the coaching staff have been told they are no longer wanted by their nation, despite equaling Benin’s best ever African Nations Cup finish.
Axed players include Reda Johnson from Reading, Stephane Sessegnon from Paris St Germain, Razak Omotoyossi from Metz and Yannick Sagbo from Monaco.
Coach, Michel Dussuyer and his 5 man coaching team were also canned. Dussuyer, who previously managed Cannes, will have his contract paid up in full. His current deal was up in June anyway so that won’t be much.
The Benin FF say that the current team lack ‘patriotism’ and cited ‘mass indicipline’ during the African Nations Cup as the reason for their clear-out.
Benin will now set out a new code of conduct and try to find new players. Of course, if they want to be competitive, the old players will certainly get a call up once the dust has settled at the BFF headquarters.
Benin finished third in Group C of the African Nations this year, losing out to winners Egypt and semi-finalists, Nigeria. Hard to please indeed, Benin have had 5 managers since 2004.
*******UPDATE*****
While Benin have announced that Michel Dussuyer has been canned, they have failed to tell the coach himself. Dussuyer claims that the first he heard about losing his job is in the media.
