Open Thread: Europa League Thursday

No, that's not Shere Khan flanked by two mushrooms from Super Mario

I know, I know, it’s kinda sad when you almost forget your team has a game until Gol TV reminds you that hey, just because you were unceremoniously dumped from one European club competition doesn’t mean you should shun the lesser of the two tournaments.

And so, we are blessed with a Europa League slate.

I’m sure Liverpool will perform tremendously well.
THE GAMES

A bunch of fixtures have already been played today, so we’ll start with those games just kicking off.

Athletic Bilbao v. Anderlecht
Atletico Madrid v. Galatasaray
FC Copenhagen v. Marseille
Fulham v. Shakhtar Donetsk
Hamburg SV v. PSV Eindhoven
Liverpool v. Unirea Urziceni
Hertha BSC v. Benfica
Panathanaikos v. AS Roma

Already over, and some surprises too:
Rubin Kazan 3, Hapoel Tel Aviv 0
Ajax 1, Juventus 2
Club Brugge 1, Valencia 0
FC Twente 1, Werder Bremen 0
Lille 2, Fenerbahce 1
Standard Liege 3, RB Salzburg 2
Villarreal 2, Wolfsburg 2

Starting Lineups:

Unirea Urziceni: Arlauskis, Maftei, Galamaz, Bruno Fernandes, Brandan, Paraschiv, Onofras, Paduretu, Apostol, Frunza, Bilasco.
Subs: Tudor, Mehmedovic, Rusescu, Nicu, Vilana, Marinescu, Bordeanu.

Liverpool: Reina, Carragher, Skrtel, Agger, Aurelio, Mascherano, Aquilani, Kuyt, Gerrard, Riera, Ngog.
Subs: Cavalieri, Kyrgiakos, Babel, Lucas, Insua, Degen, Pacheco.

AND Fulham are already up 1-0 thanks to Zoltan Gera, so that’s nice.

Fulham: Mark Schwarzer, Stephen Kelly, Brede Hangeland, Chris Baird, Aaron Hughes, Zoltan Gera, Danny Murphy, Damien Duff, Dickson Etuhu, Simon Davies, Bobby Zamora

Shakhtar Donetsk: Andriy Pyatov, Tomas Hubschmann, Olexander Kucher, Razvan Rat, Yaroslav Rakytskyy, Fernando Luis Roza Fernandinho, Rodrigues da Silva Jadson, Pereira Dias Ilsinho, Borges da Silva Willian, Darijo Srna, Souza de Silva Luiz Adriano

  1. Georger

Jens Lehman IS the Unirea Urinator!

  2. James T

this commentator on Gol TV needs to learn to move the mic away from his face when he decides to get excited about something

  3. Georger

    There’s a bit of Aqua’s passing, that was Xabi’esque.

  4. James T

Can we buy Elano from Galatasaray?

  5. Georger

Tearing it up for me in FM10 man, that team is video-game stacked. Sold Kewell to spite him.

  6. James T

a f**king fantastic goal for Reyes in the Atletico/Gala game. Wonderful free-kick from the right-hand side, swung up, over and in from 25 yards. Leo Franco was well and truly pantsed.

  7. Georger

Is the guy on the end-line the fifth official? He’s wearing long pants.

  8. Georger

Never a foul. I expect Masche to get red carded in this tie

  9. Orr

I forgot all about Liverpool after my Milan heartbreak. How do they look so far?

    Great save by Franco there

  10. Georger

Nice turn and shoot from Ngoal there, haters to the left.

  11. Orr

Good keeping in this GolTV match, can’t say the same for the camera-work

  12. Georger

I want the next forty five and previous forty five minutes of my life back.

  13. James T

We play Citeh in two days

    /shoots self in face

  14. Keith

    Camon away goal at Anfield!

    /Stupid Rapid Vienna

  15. Orr

City couldn’t beat 10 man Stoke, Liverpool’s form worries me a little, their’s does not

  16. Georger

I’m pretty sure we lost to Rapid Vienna in the preseason, I fell your pain.

Urinators don’t look much like challenging, their best chance was a sixty yard shot. So, they’ll score two.

  17. Andy

Liverpool is taking this seriously looking at those line ups.

  18. Keith

The worst of it was that we won 3-1 at Villa Park, but we had lost 2-0 at Vienna in the first leg.

  19. Georger

Andy yeah they are, but they’re not really threatening. All the possession, only a handful of chances. Aquilani has made some nice long passes though. This game needs Dani Pacheco.

  20. Orr

    Is Anfield full Georger?

  21. Georger

    Cant tell, I doubt it.

  22. Orr

Aren’t there some youngsters they could get some playing time for this?

  23. James T

Maybe we’re just hiding our tactics for Saturday and deliberately playing dreadful soccer today so City can’t gameplan accordingly?

  24. Keith

wouldn’t be a listless Liverpool draw without a Babel sighting.

  25. James T

funny you say that Keith, as Babel came on in the 77th minute during a 0-0 game at Villa Park in December. I forget how that one turned out…

  26. Keith

Fine, but that was a listless game that, bar a moment of brilliance from Space Coyote, would have been a draw, and Babel had nothing to do with the result.

  27. James T

    /nevar forget

  28. Georger

Babel has had nothing to do with most results this year, I keep forgetting we have him

Pacheco buries every chance Ngog has had WITHOUT HYPERBOLE.

  29. Georger

DANI TO NGOAL ALL DAY LONG BITCH

  30. Georger

And that was a great cross from Babel. He is certainly doing his part in winning back Rafa’s favor.

  31. James T

I think he’s more concerned with winning a spot on the Dutch squad to South Africa, though knowing full well the only way he gets that is to finally start playing well for Liverpool. Still, I’ll take it

  32. Georger

Clear as day penalty or FK there, depending where it was. Whatever.

  33. Georger

Edge of the box, should have been a FK and a second yellow, lucky bastards.

  34. Keith

I need to stop predicting things. They don’t work out when I do.

  35. Georger

Keith you should want us to go as far as possible in this tournament especially if Rafa is going to field strong lineups. Fixture pileup ftl.

  36. Ryan

Reading these comments and the Guardian mbm, I can only conclude that Sunday is going to feature some absolutely terrible football.
