Goalkeeper Shenanigans

Surprisingly, Mad Jens is not involved in this story.

Football goalkeepers are a strange breed, and there is no shortage of stories involving their shenanigans. Over the past few days two incidents have been making the rounds as everyone focuses on the potential effects of clubs being without the services of their starting GKs.

This past Saturday night Glasgow Rangers GK Allan McGregor spent a little time out and about in some Glasgow nightclubs and came out the worse for wear. After attending a birthday party for Celtic striker Cillian Sheridan at Karbon nightclub, McGregor was accosted by three men somewhere in the street outside of the club. He suffered a bruised eye-socket and received a cut on his back, both of which required him to seek hospital treatment after which the club sent him to a private clinic for further X-rays.

Yesterday McGregor filed a formal complaint with the police, but Rangers gaffer Walter Smith is more concerned that his GK might miss this Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Ibrox. This isn’t the first time that McGregor has been in trouble, and Scotland manager Craig Levein has already confirmed that the GK will be nowhere near the team for next month’s friendly against the Czech Republic.

In other stupid GK news, Inter net-minder Julio Cesar also thought it would be nice to have a bruised face and miss some time on the pitch so he crashed his Lamborghini not far from the San Siro on Sunday night. While the cause of the accident is still unknown, The Special One isn’t too happy that the GK might miss their Champions League tilt against Chelsea tomorrow (although he was back in training today).

Take it from one that knows… A great goalkeeper is only as good as the crazines that he make of his life…. Go Mac and Cesar!!!!!!!!!! Do us keepers proud!!!

  2. I its true that women are from Venus, and men are from Mars, then goalkeepers are from Pluto.

    /Still Crazy paraphrase

  3. believe me, as a GK I am well aware. That’s why I show up to most of my matches wearing my “Alone and Insane” shirt

Lots of keepers on this blog apparently. I too was a keeper. I trained with the Keeps Academy from London for a bit, I don’t know if it’s really well known but I figured maybe some of the resident Englishman may have heard of it?

Anyways the crazy reputation fits I think. What I love is that the importance of the position and just the nature of it that when they do something crazy it makes it all the more enjoyable.

Off the pitch, well, that’s private
