In just over one hundred days the greatest sporting event in the world commences with a match between South Africa and Mexico (boooooo!!!!…sorry, natural reaction) in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is a great marketing event as well because hundreds of millions of eyes will be focused on the games. It may not be on par with the Super Bowl in terms of advertisements, but there are plenty of noteworthy ads, for better or for worse.
In what will hopefully be a regular feature through the World Cup, we will be posting some of our favorite and not so favorite soccer ads. After the jump, the first installment…
This adidas ad aired during the 2006 World Cup and we all probably saw it about a thousand times over that one month time period. But, that doesn’t reduce the quality and fun factor of the ad.
And part two of the ultimate fantasy football game.

You gotta love that awful Germany ’94 shirt.
i hate germany but might wear that shirt.
I just saw there’s a bracket challenge for the WC on Soccernet, and an Unprofessional Foul group is already set up. Assume this is the OFFICIAL UF group? Or am I settling for imitations?
I’ve often wondered about the kids in that ad. I’d like to think that they were actually kids from that neighborhood but I know they’re probably rich American kids who had Spanish tutors and horrible stage parents.
Eladio-Oh yeah, I did that a while back right after the draw. It will indeed be the official one. Just consider this a cold open before we do the announcement closer to the WC itself.

@Hadley–Shame on you sir.
I like Germany and would not wear that shirt.
Jermain Defoe, England’s new No. 1?
In retrospect, how funny is it that Cisse is the first player chosen?
“Servus!” Natürlich bayerischen.
I love the kid’s laugh when the other one takes Beckenbauer.
after that tackle in video two, Robben was sidelined for eight weeks
