We couldn’t believe it either. The Stretford End explains…
In a move that could be the greatest and dumbest thing ever at the same time, the Washington Post is reporting that the MLS players have voted to strike.
Somewhere in Liverpool, Landon Donovan is doing a happy dance…
Now, before we all proclaim the MLS dead if this strike happens. Let me throw out a little idea that a friend of mine who knows about such things passed along:
What if the MLS goes away until right around World Cup time, then they make a deal and play the second half of a season after the Cup? Ratings for MLS during the summer, and especially during a World Cup, will be horrible. And let’s not kid ourselves that attendance is so large that this will drive away the fans who are already invested in these teams. In fact, most people and reporters I know are on the players’ side with this one, so they could – repeat, COULD – applaud this move.
Look, I’m not saying a strike is a good thing. But it might not be as absolutely fatal as it looks at first blush.

I said around two months ago that a short strike definitely wouldn’t be 100% percent bad. Right now the season is slated to begin on a Thursday night, going up against the NCAA Sweet 16, Philadelphia’s stadium isn’t ready yet, forcing them to play at Lincoln Financial Field for a little bit, where even a good crowd will look lacking. Plus, as you mentioned, it would allow Landon to stay in Europe for a little while longer.
Also, it’s a vote to strike if they can’t reach an agreement in two weeks. I thought TSE was against hyperbole? :-)
I think the players would have been better off taking the team’s money until after the world cup, then striking. That would have caused the most damage to league.
Spot on, TFA. This is a final PR thrust on the behalf of the MLSPA and the ‘tards running it, before they finally throw in the towel and take what they get.
Kinda makes me glad I’ve not picked up tickets yet for the Union’s home opener. Tickermaster never refunds their blasted “convienence” fee.
good for landon he definitely deserves to play out this season for the blue scouse. if he continues on his current form it will do usmnt wonders this summer
