Seattle Sounders Sartorial Strangulation

Do you have a license for those deadly weapons?

Picture this – an exhibition match against an MLS side, which, given the possibility of a strike, might be your only chance in a while to see some MLS players in action. It’s away, but it’s not too far and you make the trip. Your faith is rewarded when your side wins 1-0, and you’re feeling pretty good as you exit the stadium. Always nice to get a big win against big competition, especially when they’re a local rival.

Maybe you’re feeling a little too good, or maybe the win has you feeling a bit big for your britches. You spot some rival fans and talk a little trash. Bad move. A Portland Timbers fan learned this the hard way after his club beat the Seattle Sounders 1-0 and he got a little lippy with them after the match. He thought it was “friendly banter”, but they interpreted it as an invitation to choke him him with his own scarf. Feeling that wasn’t sufficient, they also proceeded to drag him around on the sidewalk by the scarf.

Thankfully, the Timbers fan didn’t suffer any serious injuries, but those Sounders fans had better watch their backs (and throats). That’s not the kind of crap that Mad Jens will take lightly.

I can’t imagine Mad Jens would warm to MLS’s physicality or general inept play. If he did make a move to MLS, what’s the over/under on his first red card?

As a Sounders season ticket holder (please God let me be able to use these tickets!), this pisses me off. I’m all for heated rivalry, but c’mon, it’s not like the guy insulted your mother. It’s a charity match. I watched it, and Seattle played like turds in green shirts. Timbers deserved the win. Did we mention that it was an f-ing CHARITY match? That being said, Timbers fans are damned annoying, and rule #1 is: don’t mouth off to rival fans outside their own stadium after an exhibition win. And Sounders fans, don’t be douches. Lead by example, people.

This pisses me off that a group of douche bag morons even felt that this type action was okay. It would be nice if they eventually get arrested, but I’m not going to hold my breath until it happens. As always, it is the fringe elements that will negatively affect the game we love and how it is perceived. I keep telling my co-workers about how fun and positive the experience is watching the Sounders play at Qwest. Now this happens. I was at the game along with 18,606 other Sounders and Timbers fans and the impression I had was that things were fine within the stadium.

As a Sounders season ticket holder it was the same problem from last year. Poor finishing and an inability to find the back of the net. The Timbers played a decent defensive counter attacking style of game while the Sounders blew at least two or three decent scoring chances.
