Are the days of MLS teams signing old, has-been players done? I’m noticing a trend of younger players entering the league and having a strong impact on the product. Youngsters like Ryan Smith at Kansas, Fredi Montero at Seattle and Collins John are doing fine jobs this season already, but it’s behind them where youth is leading the way;
After losing to rivals the LA Galaxy last Thursday, Chivashave signed Costa Rican international Dario Delgado on loan. But Delgado isn’t the only young defender being trusted with defensive duties this season; at the Galaxy, Brazilian youngster Leonardo is imposing himself. In Kansas, Michael Harrington continues to impress and in New York, Tim Ream is owning the back four.
It’s clear from the play already that this year’s younger signings have had an impact on the standard of play. Let’s hope the trend continues and that the days of slow, old cloggers collecting large pay checks are done, and that the days of young talented players in their early 20′s and players like Lindpere and Auvray arriving at their peak are here to stay.

I’d certainly be happy with MLS becoming a “feeder league” for the Big UEFA nations like the Brazilian and Argentinian leagues are.
Watching the Seattle v. New York match over the weekend, I couldn’t help but be impressed by Tim Ream and the Estonian David Beckham Joel Lindpere. I might actually pay attention to this league for once.
epiblast-
you should check out KC then, the mentioned Wizards in this (R. Smith, Auvray, Harrington) are more impressive than the players you just mentioned.
Union have also signed 18 year old Columbian Roger Torres, who looked good against Seattle.
As if to disprove this thesis, the Fire have brought in 33YO DM Filip Tapalovic on a 1-week trial.
To further disprove this thesis, Patrick Vieira is being tipped for a post summer move to MLS.
As is Robert Pires. F**k it, I’m gonna start a George Weah to NY rumor again!
(old fans of the Metrostars will get that one)
