Pass the drugs, Mutu, because you’ve got a bender on the horizon!
The Romania/Fiorentina striker received his latest ban for failing a drug test yesterday, a nine-month jaunt effective immediately. Poor Mutu. The punishment, handed down after he tested positive for sibutramine (he claims they were an ingredient in some slimming pills his mother gave him, which has totally happened to all of us at one time or another), will keep him off the field until October 29, so presumably he’ll spend the summer learning all about the substances he should avoid in the future.
Adrian reckons the ban is harsh — “It seems too much. I expected less because, yes, the mistake was made, it’s right to pay, but not so much.” — and he can still appeal, but of more interest to him will be the fact that the ban should keep him at Fiorentina and wreck his chances of a summer transfer. Mutu managed 50 goals in 91 appearances for the Violas.
