Pray for Exeter Bootroom

Pride of Devon

No EPL, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t serious business today. You see, my beloved Exeter City, having been promoted the previous two seasons, are now hanging on by their very fingernails to League One. An away draw to Hartlepool last weekend has Exeter tied on points with Tranmere for the drop. Hartlepool (thanks to being docked points this week for fielding an illegible player) and Gillingham are only a couple points away as well.

But here’s what you need to know: Because Exeter has a clear goal difference advantage over Tranmere, if Exeter equals or betters Tranmere’s result, then they are safe. What makes me nervous is that Exeter are hosting Huddersfield Town, who are one of five teams within reach of the final automatic promotion spot below Ned’s Norwich City. Tranmere, on the other hand, are away to Stockport County, who have only won an abysmal five games all season. So, essentially, anything less than a win by Exeter likely means trouble.

What’s at stake? Beyond just the satisfaction of staying up with the big(ger) boys in League One, there’s the possibility of a West County derby next season against the green scum of Plymouth. You see, Exeter and their close rivals haven’t been in the same league since 2002, but thanks to Plymouth’s s**tty season and bad management they’re dropping from the Championship. But next year’s derby must wait until today’s game is resolved, and… have I mentioned I’m nervous? So, please think good thoughts for my beloved Grecians. Up the City!

Hurray!

There are games in France, Spain and Germany today too. Those fixtures and my nervous commentary after the hop.
