Pray for Exeter Bootroom

Pride of Devon

No EPL, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t serious business today. You see, my beloved Exeter City, having been promoted the previous two seasons, are now hanging on by their very fingernails to League One. An away draw to Hartlepool last weekend has Exeter tied on points with Tranmere for the drop. Hartlepool (thanks to being docked points this week for fielding an illegible player) and Gillingham are only a couple points away as well.

But here’s what you need to know: Because Exeter has a clear goal difference advantage over Tranmere, if Exeter equals or betters Tranmere’s result, then they are safe. What makes me nervous is that Exeter are hosting Huddersfield Town, who are one of five teams within reach of the final automatic promotion spot below Ned’s Norwich City. Tranmere, on the other hand, are away to Stockport County, who have only won an abysmal five games all season. So, essentially, anything less than a win by Exeter likely means trouble.

What’s at stake? Beyond just the satisfaction of staying up with the big(ger) boys in League One, there’s the possibility of a West County derby next season against the green scum of Plymouth. You see, Exeter and their close rivals haven’t been in the same league since 2002, but thanks to Plymouth’s s**tty season and bad management they’re dropping from the Championship. But next year’s derby must wait until today’s game is resolved, and… have I mentioned I’m nervous? So, please think good thoughts for my beloved Grecians. Up the City!

Hurray!

There are games in France, Spain and Germany today too. Those fixtures and my nervous commentary after the hop.

The FIFA update you’ve all been waiting for: US gets knocked out in CONCACAF-CONMEBOL playoff by Colombia, capping off an abysmal qualifying effort. Fans blame an injury to Jozy Altidore and my impotent managerial skills for the setback.

  2. Orr

What system did you grab it for Ryan?

  3. Goat

    Lenhart has to score there.

  4. James T

    @Ryan
So is it worth grabbing? I’m still loving FIFA10

  5. Orr

    How long is Reis out?

  6. Goat

@Orr: Not sure but I think he’s been out all year.

  7. Goat

Ref had to get his cards from the AR.

  8. Goat

Who the f**k is this Boggs cat?

  9. Ryan

@JT Ah, that’s tough to say. I hate to make recommendations, seeing as it’s $60 and would feel bad if you didn’t like it. I traded in FIFA 10 to get it, not regretting it one bit, but at the same time, World Cup games aren’t for everyone.

  10. Orr

Wow, nice initial ball there! Get in Goat!

  11. Goat

    Finally!

  12. Goat

Got the 3 ppints they deserved–and entertaining for neutrals to boot.

  13. Orr

I hope I can get the Red Bulls game on my satellite later, sometimes it gives me MSG sometimes it doesn’t

  14. Ryan

    Wow, a Robbie Rogers sighting.

I got home in time to find out that the Dynamo are up 2-0, and the FS network now puts the home team first even on “local” coverage. 20 mins to go…

  17. jjf3

Sorry, I lied about the FS network. For some reason, I thought this game was in Houston. It is not. So, yes, FS network still lists the home team last.
Also, I’d like our DP Landin a lot more if he wasn’t a) fat, and b) a terminal diver.

@jjf3: It must be difficult to tell when Houston is at home when there are no football lines on the field yet.
