This Is Why You Don’t Let Maradona Operate Heavy Machinery

Really. He did this.

This is indeed footage of Diego Maradona running over a journalist on his way home following a tough day’s work. Having cut 6 players from his 30 earlier in the day — Ezequiel Lavezzi, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Sosa, Juan Mercier, Sebastian Blanco, and Juan Insaurralde, if you were dying to know — his haste to nip home for an 8-ball (not really – UF Legal Team) coupled with the swarm of pencil-pushers around his car was a perfect storm. And so he ran over part of the storm’s lower leg.

Le scandale!

At this point, we’re hardly surprised at any ridiculous or criminal act perpetrated by Maradona. The stress of the spotlight has usually been a welcome high for the Argentine No. 10, but actions like this demonstrate that he’s not having nearly as much fun at present. With the burden of expectation foisted upon him by a soccer-mad nation, he’s bound to lash out. Presumably next time, he’ll flat out kill the guy.

Some thoughts:

1. He drives a Mini Cooper? Doesn’t that seem like the last car Diego might choose to drive? Iconic British vehicle + coked-up, delusional Argentine icon… not the best combination.

2. This video seems to pick up right after the journalist was hit, which is moderately disappointing. It’s the kind of letdown you experience when you’re browsing the web for a particular video, think you’ve found it (thanks to a title/subject line in ALL CAPS!!! OMFG WATCH THIS!!!), only to discover it’s a f**king RickRoll.

3. Mild credit to Diego for having a firm grasp of the adage, “adding insult to injury.” In this case, he had the gall to yell at the fallen journo: “What an a**hole you are… how can you put your leg there where it can get run over, man?!?” At least we can’t blame the guy for not finishing what he started.

#2 Or reading about a sex-tape that someone is only “threatening” to released. So annoying.

Only tenuously connected to the topic of this post, but:

I cannot believe he f**king cut Lavezzi (who is one of my favorite players). :(

Aye, Anonsters. He’s a good player, but just no way of breaking through at the moment. Tevez, Higuain, Messi, and Aguero all keep him out of the picture

“Boludo” translates better as moron or idiot rather than a**hole, but the insult still stands. Oh, and Minis are a lot easier to park in Buenos Aires than SUV’s.

Thanks, Ben! I should have known that the media had ramped it up unnecessarily.

As for the Minis… I’m still surprised that an iconic English car is so popular with the Argentine masses, if what you’re saying about congestion/parking is true. They’re still pissed about the Malvinas!

Well, you generally see a lot more Citroens, Pugs, Alfas, Fiats, and Fords than Minis. The Mini is basically a luxury car down there because of import taxes. But yes, parking congestion and fuel cost dictates that most people prefer hatchbacks.

Btw, “boludo” is considered a vulgar term, but it’s mild enough that it usually doesn’t even get censored on Argentine TV.

  7. we have a “The Fat Argentine” tag for a reason, sir!
