Remember Luis Felipe Scolari? Won a World Cup with Brazil, tried vainly to impart his wisdom on a Chelsea side that didn’t need or want him, and then floated around in London for a while before signing a massive deal to coach Uzbek champions Bunyodkor?
Well, it seems like his Uzbek dream is over; the club is considering cutting his contract short as part of a cost-cutting ploy. Reasonable enough when you consider that Scolari banked a reported 13m euros per season for sauntering along the touchline and coaxing Rivaldo into some solid performances.
The Tashkent-based club did successfully defend their Uzbek Super League title with Scolari at the helm, though is that really saying much? A cursory glance at the league standings show that Bunyodkor finished on 86 points with an undefeated season (28 wins, 2 draws), and only 22 points ahead of their nearest challenger, FC Pakhtakor Tashkent.
Said Scolari on the club’s decision: “If we reach an agreement, I’ll will be free to decide my future,” which sounds like a thinly-veiled “you can cut me, but it’s going to cost you.” As for his next move, he wants to return to Europe or Brazil. Good news, Phil; I hear Pompey is hiring…
