Hyundai Falls Prey to Mass Stupidity

That commercial you’ve been seeing about the “church” in Argentina that worships soccer? Some Catholics didn’t get the joke.

I would love to post it, but Hyundai has pulled the ad after receiving pressure from Catholic groups that called it sacrilegious. Really, Catholics?! Really?!

Full disclosure: I’m Catholic. Or I was raised Catholic, anyway. I found the spot fairly innocuous, and not even that well done. It’s nowhere near as bad as if there was a group that gathered every week to kneel before a poster of Edward Cullen (which really exists, by the way).

I mean it’s a TV commercial, people. But then you have religious groups like this talking about how the church is unfairly picked on and that there isn’t a commercial making fun of Jews or Muslims. Really, political Web site?! Really?!

It’s soccer. Around here, it’s almost a life and death affair, but we still remember that it’s only a game, and the commercial was making fun of people like us.

So get over it, calm down and work on some of the other real issues you have in the world.

They’re right, the Jews don’t get made fun of nearly enough.

I haven’t seen the ad, but I’m guessing it refers to the church that worships Diego Maradona. It’s all rather silly. Most of the “faithful” are just Catholics who really really love Diego.

Btw, in case you just looked at my avatar, no I’m not a member of that church.

  4. @Ben: I’m not even sure it’s that church. It seems like a made-up thing, and a guy’s funeral includes the body in face paint and holding a ball. It’s just silly.

TSE: I think you are confusing two different spots. But I’m glad the Catholics took time out from buggering altar boys to register their outrage. And yes, I’m also Catholic… or was.

TJ, but the Jabulani must’ve been to blame for this one, too:

  7. PR: possible since there are four that are part of the campaign.

I totally thought that church was real.

Jeez, Anonsters… emphatic point! I concede that he may have done it on purpose.

  10. Please more chosen people jokes and old dudes who bang 9 yr old girls, these are woefully missing (unless South Park goes into advertising).

Hyundai could just say theirs was a documentary:

  11. Knowing nothing more about this I’m guessing that Bill Donohue of the Catholic League is somehow involved.

You are allowed to promote god all you want, but as soon as you slander him or say he doesn’t exist, you get into trouble. I love double standards.
