Well Someone Doesn’t Think It Was Cheating

Dios Mio

And that person is Luis Suarez himself.

Get a load of this quote: “The Hand of God now belongs to me. Mine is the real Hand Of God. I made the best save of the tournament. Sometimes in training I play as a goalkeeper so it was worth it. There was no alternative but for me to do that and when they missed the penalty I thought, ‘It is a miracle and we are alive in the tournament.’”

Cheating? No, he had no alternative. Of course that was also Bernie Goetz’ defense, so make of its convenience what you will.

Uruguay are through. And the refs can’t even be blamed. Suarez handled the ball. He was punished according to the rules of the game. And Asamoah Gyan will probably never not live a day of his life thinking “What if…” after he missed the resulting penalty kick and collapsed under the weight of an entire continent.

It’s hard to think Ghana wasn’t somehow wronged—James T’s argument that this should be more like goaltending than an intentional foul in basketball does resonate—but you’d be silly to argue this didn’t make for great theater.

That’s a douchey statement to make. Ugh. I agree that there’s not much else that could be done about it. He did get the red card and what not but he doesn’t have to be a douchebag about it.

  2. Suarez is a huge douche for that statement. He is now on my list.

  3. A striker who plays as a goalkeeper, you say? North Korea is interested.

  4. Marcamps

    f**k that puto.

  5. why do so many folks seem over-aggrieved because of this? what if gyan makes the pk? then nobody cares.

a red card and a pen are awarded precisely for this kind of thing. the “new hand…” is a moronic statement to make of course, but it was quick thinking by suarez and it worked. soccer’s chastity wasn’t violated or anything.

having said that and defended the man, i hope the dutch run uruguay right through the belly.

Ghana shd hv bn awarded a goal–the ball was in, past the Goal line. It was hit out of the goal net by Suarez’s hand. The awarding of Penalty shot was a moot point. It was Ghana’s win. Why melodrama obfuscates reality!

  7. Tno

    @Linde
    No it wasn’t

  8. uruman

Did you see the offside position of the ghana player just when they sent the ball to the box and the keper came out a gahna player headed it over him and went to a nother ghanian player? At thet point it was only one player betwen the ghanian and the goal line.go and look at the reply.Just like the one disalauod on Mexico south africa’s game.

he did what he had to do for his team. as much as i feel for gyan, he choked plain and simple. suarez’s comments make him a c**t but if for example bornstein had done the same thing to save us i’d have no problem with it the way i have no problem with what suarez did. he saved his team from losing. if gyan doesnt blow it we’re not even talking about it. yea it’s a s**tty thing to have happen to guy who was one of the top players in the whole tournament but suarez didnt cheat. he broke the rules to save his team from elimination. his comments on the other hand make him an insufferable c**t and i hope the dutch sen uruguay packing.

This is why I think Referees should be allowed to give goals that were obviously robbed from a team.

However that could cause some real problems…still I hate this kind of cheating.

This type of behavior (and all the other diving) is ruining the game. I believe that Suarez should be banned for life from any FIFA World Cup competitions as should any and all others shown to brazenly / purposefully defraud the game.

  12. UKhanDoIt

Any other player would have done the same to keep their team in the tournament. he broke the rules of the game and was punished accordingly; this is getting such a reaction b/c it was the last African team, trying to go further than any other African team has ever gone, in the 1st tournament in Africa. Everyone was rooting for them including me, but the fact is they had their chances and didn’t take them, nobody to blame but themselves.
Is Suarez kind of a prick especially in light of his comments? yes. But i would do the same thing in his position and so would you.

  13. Fifa should put in their books any prayer who handle the
ball behind the goalkeeper is an automatic goal and not a
    panelty which is 50/50 chance.

  14. Ayodele

To me the ball is a goal just like Sambea have said, any ball handled by a Player behind the goalkeeper in a goal post is an automatic goal and not a penalty which is a 50/50 chance.

  15. dan

    @UKhanDoIt – I wasn’t rooting for them. F**k Ghana.

  16. st

FIFA should change the rules like in the basketball. If it’s obviously that the ball goes to the goal any unallowed behavior should be sanctioned and the goal recognized. In contrary no more sport, no more interesting fair-play games. F**k the cheaters.

  17. Matt B

Fer crissakes, Ghana honked 3 out of 5 PKs at the end of the game. That makes the Dutch look good by comparison. The first save in the shootout (with the 1 step runup) was hit with all the force a 10 year old girl might muster.

Even if Ghana hadn’t bounced USA in the last two WMs I tell them to shut their pieholes. But since they did, then they can go pound sand while they’re at it.

  18. Trevor

WTH? Why are you all whining like little babies? The rules are that an intentional hand ball in the box to save a goal is a red card. Suarez made a smart play to stop a goal. He knew when he did it he’d get a red card. But Gyan sucked it big time and Uruguay lived another day. There is no injustice here. Suarez didn’t try to conceal the hand ball. He did no Henry or Maradona. Ghana just sucked at PK’s. End of story.

  19. Dustin

I don’t believe that doing this means you should even get the chance to stop the goal (on the ensuing PK). It’s cheating, let the ref give a goal then you wouldn’t ever see it again.
