Not everyone was happy with the result last night, but I was glad to see Iniesta celebrating his massive, career-highlight moment with an entirely selfless goal celebration.
And to think, he didn’t even complain about the yellow card from ref Howard Webb for removing his shirt!
For anyone who missed it (though I don’t think anyone has by now), Iniesta scores, strips, and shares a sweet message dedicated to a close friend.
I don’t think Arjen Robben, for example, would have had such forethought.
First, the goal itself (and you’ll see the message on the undershirt briefly)
It reads: “Dani Jarque – Siempre Con Nosotros” (always with us), aimed at the Espanyol captain who died last summer in preseason training. He’d been given the armband a month prior to his death from a heart attack, and was close friends with Iniesta and some of the Barca players dating back to their time together as stars for the Spanish Youth Teams years ago.
Said Iniesta: “I wanted to carry Dani with me and with my other team-mates. We wanted to feel his strength. We wanted to pay tribute to him – and this was the best opportunity to do so. This is for Dani, for my family, for all of the people. It is the result of hard work over a long time and some difficult moments.”
It was, like the Carbonero/Casillas clinch, a perfectly sweet moment. We’d all forgotten about Jarque, and this was the perfect forum to memorialize him again and bring his name back to the forefront.

I think the headline should read “Andres Iniesta Is a Scary Reverse Vampire”
How about a compromise: “Andres Iniesta Is a Scary Reverse Good Vampire Guy”
Did other players have the same shirt or would Jarque have gone unremembered had Iniesta not been the one to score?
I’m guessing Iniesta would have shown the shirt at full-time had Spain won. Or on the podium.
Andres Iniesta is a Scary Good Reverse Guy Vampire?
Sigh…
Let’s try this way, then.
@LE
i read somewhere that Sergio Ramos’ undershirt has a tribute to Antonio Puerta. So yeah, the tribute is Iniesta’s personal IMO
yeah, Sergio Ramos wore a shirt paying tribute to Antonio Puerta during the trophy presentation/subsequent celebration.
and there’s a picture of Jesus Navas in the locker room with his own shirt honoring Puerta, more akin to Iniesta’s.
the title should be “Andres Iniesta is a good ghost” Casper was nice too, no?
Poor reffing marred this tournament but in the final game the ref was world class. The Orangemen evidently calculated their play to disrupt the Spanish flow with damn-the-consequences foulplay. They ticked off the ref and Spain capitalized with their own crafty flops. The ref kept a rough game under control throughout as Holland disgraced itself with poor sportsmanship and Spain kept their composure and scored. Let’s hear it for Mr Webb.
