This is Thierry Henry being interviewed on New York’s Fox 5. And it’s hilarious.
Though it makes me wonder how on earth soccer could take root in the US when these heroes, Rosanna Scott and Greg Kelly, are given precious time to ask banal questions to the Red Bulls’ newest star, I also don’t care too much. Morning TV is the equivalent of Man Getting Hit By Football, containing such gems as a drunk Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee doing a cooking segment with some kid from a kids’ TV show.
It can’t have been fun at the time — particularly the comment from Scotto about him recently winning the World Cup — but in retrospect, I find it really, really enjoyable to see Thierry Henry squirm on live morning TV. And honestly, the Frenchman — and MLS, indirectly — will get more mileage out of a disastrous interview thanks to all the RTs, email fwds and blog posts than they would any carefully-orchestrated campaign.
So, Morning TV hosts of America: the bar has been set. I challenge you all to rush out and schedule sit-down chats with MLS players in the hopes of topping this calamity.
(And don’t forget this gem from the archives when having this “Worst MLS Interview Ever” discussion… gosh, we were so full of rage back then)

The racism line of questioning was excruciating to listen to. This almost makes me feel bad for Henry. Almost.
Does this mean NYC isn’t Titty’s favorite city any more?
TJ:
15.14 BST: Bad news for those Arsenal fans hoping that Arsene Wenger will sign a goalkeeper. The agent of one of the players they’ve been linked with, Udinese’s Samir Handanovic, has told Tuttomercatoweb.com: “Handanovic will not be moving. Arsenal have decided not to spend money to buy a goalkeeper.”
.
Lulz. I hope that’s true. Another season of Almunia and Flappyhandski would be great.
Also a TJ:
This interview makes me hate Joe Cole a little bit.
Also, Spurs are now being linked with… Raul. Yes, Raul. Oy.
Also, UF could use a transfer rumor open thread. :P
@Anonsters
I think we could accommodate such a request later today. I’d love a dedicated place where we can mock Spurs and all the players they’re not signing.
@JT: Why do you want to make puppies cry? Meanie.
@JT: Yes, because if there’s one thing Spurs is known for, it’s not signing players in the transfer window. I sure wish ‘Arry wasn’t so reluctant to buy and sell players.
I hope this interview makes it on to The Soup.
@Anonsters
Your rough dog tricks have made me weep plenty over the last few weeks. This is my little ray of sunshine.
@LE
Maybe because Redknapp already bought all his old players?
@anon: It’s not Joe Cole’s fault. He went to Liverpool because he couldn’t get into Tottenham’s first team. Don’t hate him just because he’s not good enough.
I can’t bring myself to watch this. I just can’t.
@JT: Oh yeah? Well take that. And some of that too.
@LE
Thanks for my first good laugh of the day!
@JT: Really? Who’s he going to displace of Bale Modric Hudd and Lennon? Liverpool have a Benayoun shaped hole in their midfield.
@Anon
Heart = melted
@LE
I dunno LE, I’m sure deep down, all these guys who didn’t pick WHL are kicking themselves for not doing it, but they can take solace in the fact that the club didn’t need or want them anyway and was just wooing them to pass the time.
@anon: Dammit pupsters. Now I need to go buy a Finnish Lapphund. Whatever the f**k that is. It’s just too damn cute.
@JT: I’m not saying we didn’t need him and didn’t want him. Joe Cole is a great player. But we couldn’t guarantee him a first team spot. Liverpool could. Combine that with a massive wage packet, it’s a no brainer.
I believe Wesley Snipes said it best: always bet on puppies.
.
Re Joe Cole, what’s more: Liverpool gave him a 4 year deal. With massive wages. 4 years of massive wages for a guy who’s 29, injury-prone, and who Spartak London let go on a free. Great piece of business, that.
Joe Cole likes the Beatles!?! See, footballers are just like us
@Anonsters
We all make weird business decisions in the EPL. See: Rebrov, Sergei
@LE – You think Spurs are going to hang onto Edur? Hopefully they do, that dude still has some in the tank and was pretty smooth every time he got to play.
@knocs: I really can’t see us buying him, especially if we get Bellamy. If we can get him on loan again I think we’d do it, but if other clubs want to buy him outright Monaco will have to take them up on it. But I thought he was great last year and would love if we could hang onto him as a squad player.
I missed this. I was watching Yo Gabba Gabba instead.
