In two weeks from now, a group of 20 people from Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York are heading to KwaZulu Natal, South Africa, to work at an orphanage.
While there, they will be constructing of 2 playgrounds, running a sports camp for the orphanage and surrounding village and also running a micro-finance business workshop for local entrepreneurs.
More on the orphanage:
Lily of the Valley is a non-profit faith-based organization that cares for AIDS infected and affected children. With facilities located at the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epicenter in South Africa, Lily of the Valley also serves needy communities in KwaZulu Natal. LILY provides physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual care through counseling, medical attention and support to those who are sick. Their orphanage houses 120 children and teenagers, 80% of which have AIDS. The greater goal of Lily of the Valley is to inspire an ethical, income-generating community through projects which provide sustainable food, education, income generation and life skills.
So where do you come in UF readers? Well, when asked what these kids needed, the reply was a simple one that YOU lot can relate to: “We need soccer jerseys, cleats and balls”.
So, here’s the deal—you have until Aug 12th to help (short notice, I know!) get these kids and teens kitted out. I’m sending a Cosmo’s jersey and some Nike Tiempos, so join me in donating.
Have a good rummage in that closet of yours, and get yourself off to the post office. I can’t imagine having to play footy bare-foot, or not having access to a ball—can you?
