Sunday saw the CopaNYC final in Flushing, Queens, but it also saw a couple of notable announcements related to the old NASL franchise the New York Cosmos. In all the years since, former staffer Peppe Pinton has held all rights to the brand and kept it alive in spirit, but Sunday’s announcement shows that we might not be far from seeing it again in American soccer.
That’s right, folks: the NY Cosmos are looking to get back up and running under new ownership, with their primary goal set: re-establish the team “as a part of Major League Soccer.”
Don Garber did note recently that he’s receptive to the idea of another NY-area team, aware of the obvious rivalry elements and how profitable such things tend to be. Plus, a team in Queens provides a strong catchment zone for fans not willing to make the trek out to New Jersey…

Thank god!! I truly hope this happens. This will be the real NYC team. Henry is probably already plotting his transfer. Assuming, they build a soccer specific stadium near Shea, I predict they will lead the league in attendance and merchandise sales in year 1. If they screw that up and put the team in Hofstra or somethign stupid, then all bets are off.
@Al
I think so too, but a long way to go yet. Need to find the right site, the right financiers, etc. Think that Garber hoped for another NYC-area franchise by 2013 or so… there is time for everything to fall into place.
Peppe pinton sold the cosmos name to some guy from England.

Hmm, Queens or NJ…. such a wonderful choice.
Like deciding whether you want to be f**ked by Jack the ripper or fingered by Capt Hook.
Wait, so Mets fans would willingly choose to support another Wilpon-owned abomination? I look forward to the reborn Cosmos sucking hard under RBNY domination.
