2010-2011 EPL Previews: Everton

The club crest

The English Premier League (suck it, Barclays!) season is just around the corner, so we here at UF are giving you everything you need to know about all 20 teams with our award-winning analysis. And no, we haven’t really won any awards, but neither has Arsenal in five years and people still seem to care about them.

Official Name:
Everton Football Club

Nickname:

The Blues, The Toffees

Home Colors:

Blue

Trophy Case:
Amply filled. Everton have won the league nine times, most recently in 1987. They have won the FA Cup five times, lifting the trophy at Wembley the last time in 1995. The trophy cabinent also includes two league cups, nine Charity shields, and one piece of European silverware, from the Cup Winners Cup in 1985.

2009-10 League Finish:

Eighth. Early struggles mostly due to injuries caused the club to miss out on European football, but Everton was phenomenal in the last three months of the season.

2009-10 Cup Finish:

Everton failed to make it out of the fourth round in either domestic Cup competition, losing to Tottenham in the Carling Cup and Birmingham in the FA Cup. They lost to Sporting Lisbon in the round of 32 in the Europa League.

Stadium:

Goodison Park. Everton’s home since 1892 and the host of the most top flight league matches in the history of English football. There has been talk of a new stadium since the mid 1990s, but as of now nothing concrete is on the table. Its not exactly the best time to be financing a new sporting boondoggle, and a ground share with Liverpool at the proposed Stanley Park is not a preferred option for most Toffee’s supporters.

History:
Everton are the oldest club in Liverpool, having been founded in 1878, 14 years before their cross town rivals. They have been in the top flight since inception and have never been relegated.

Gaffer:

Happy face

David Moyes. One of the best managers in the Premiership, the Glaswegian is tipped to be the next manager of Manchester United (if SAF ever retires). He has been at Everton since 2002, which is ages in the Premiership, and has led the club to its best run of top half success since the mid 80s, even if silverware (or consistent Champions League football), has remained out of his grasp.

First Team:

GK: Tim Howard, Iain Turner, Jan Mucha

DEF: Tony Hibbert, Leighton Baines, Joseph Yobo, John Heitinga, Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin, Seamus Coleman, Shane Duffy

MID: Diniyar Bilyaletdinov, Mikel Arteta, Tim Cahill, Phillip Neville, Steven Pienaar, Leon Osman, Maroune Fellaini, Jack Rodwell, James Wallace

ST: Louis Saha, James Vaughan, Jermaine Beckford, Magaye Gueye (who?), Yakubu, Joao Silva, Kieran Agard, Jose Baxter

Transfers In:

Magaye Gueye Strasbourg £900,000
Joao Silva Desportivo Das Aves £500,000
Jermaine Beckford Leeds United Free
Ján Mucha Legia Warsaw Free

Transfers Out:

Lukas Jutkiewicz Coventry City £1m
John Ruddy Norwich City Undisclosed
Dan Gosling Newcastle United Free
Anton Peterlin Plymouth Argyle Free
Carlo Nash Released

As is clear from above, Everton had a really quiet summer. There was some BS Arteta to Barca transfer talk, and the embarrassing release of Dan Gosling after forgetting to offer him a contract.

Key Players:
Mikel Arteta: Has dealt with injuries lately, but when he’s on, he could start in the midfield for nearly any side on earth. Except for his own national team, of course. Recently signed a five year extension which should keep his name out of the transfer rumors for a while.

Tim Cahill: One of my top five most loathed players in England, but its hard to argue with the Aussie’s goal scoring return, especially from a midfield position. More of a poacher than anything, but goals are goals.

Nice 'do

Marouane Felliani: One of the breakout stars of last season for me, if he can can come back strong from his injury than Everton’s midfield would be amongst the best in England.

Drama:
Not much. Everton brass are out telling everyone within earshot that signing the likes of Cahill, Arteta, and Rodwell to longer term deals this summer means they are not a selling club.

Tactics!:
Moyes is a mix and matcher. Everton will tend to run out in a 4-5-1, with Cahill playing as almost a withdrawn forward in support of the striker. This shape can at times turn into the trendy 4-2-3-1 or the 4-1-4-1.

Question Marks:

Is the injury bug over? Moyes was quiet in the summer transfer window, reckoning that getting all of his star players back from injury meant that he didn’t need to buy. However, there have been so many injuries lately that you have to wonder if some of the Everton players are simply injury prone, and therefore shouldn’t be counted on to play a full season.

Will Jermaine Beckford replicate his lower level goalscoring ability? Because if he doesn’t, the front line is looking a bit thin and petulant.

Important Fixtures:

Home games against everyone, including the big dogs. Everton was only 7th in home points last year, as Goodison was slightly less fortress-like than in years past. If they want to play European football, then they must rack up the points on home turf.

Prediction:
Last spring’s form carries over, the injury bug mostly stays away, some of the younger players develop…….and Everton finish 6th. Just not enough depth and quality for me to pick them over Man City or Liverpool.

So if Everton are 6th, and they aren’t getting past Man City or Liverpool, who are they displacing?

  2. Goosie

I haven’t figured out how to get around my adoration for Tim Howard and the fact that I’ve decided to support Liverpool. Hmm.

  3. Brian

Aston Villa would be my guess, unless he feels Spurs are going to fall off a cliff this year

  4. ebullientfatalist

My mind is still boggled that Gosling went on a free due to an administrative oversight. I expect those type of muck-ups from Hull or Bolton, but not the Toffees.

    Do I contradict myself?
    Very well, then, I contradict myself;
    (I am large—I contain multitudes.)

Lesson from Walt. All fixed! :)

  6. Brian

I’m blaming Gosling for the whole thing since apparently Gosling had a handshake agreement for a new deal with Everton, but then decided to leave because he deserved more first team time. Also he is taking a pay cut to go to Newcastle compared to the handshake agreement, but it was a bit naive of Everton to not formally offer the contract.

Ok, because I’m neurotic generally, and I’m having a particularly neurotic day today, I feel it necessary to correct my previous quotation of Whitman. Damned punctuation that I didn’t notice until I hit post (because I’m also ADD! Crazy puppy!)

    Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

That, according to the 1891-92 edition of Leaves (with a link to an awesome Walt website and everything!)

Like you, I am curious how Beckford does against the big boys. Also, after Saha inevitably gets injured, who do they have upfront? Three youngs guys fighting it out (Beckford, Vaughn and Gueye) and the ageless wonder Yakubu. They could have a very strong front line in a couple years though if those three mature together.

  9. Ryan

@Brian: The way I read it, if Everton is sixth, and they’re behind Liverpool and City, then the top 6 has to be in some order: Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Spurs/Arsenal. So finishing ahead of Villa doesn’t displace any of the above.

  10. Brian

@Ryan That is right, I kept reading this article as saying they would finish 7th, up from 8th place last season. So my guess would then be they are also moving ahead of Spurs who will probably suffer a bit of a lapse due to the number of mathces they will play and their relative squad depth.

  11. James T

They let Jukiewicz go so easily! And after goals like this in Scotland…

  12. Brian

@whizalen, latest rumor is that Everton is putting in a 13 million pound bid on Luc Remy sp? the French forward, and are funding the transaction in part with the sale of Yakubu to West Hame for about 8-9 million

  13. Goosie

@Anon – You make me laugh. I’m glad you’ve reconciled my contradictions for me. Now, I can sleep at night. :)

  14. James T

    @Brian
Seems like trading one patchy FW for another, imo.

  15. Brian

@JT, I think it comes down to Remy having more upside considering he is only 23, compared to Yakubu’s 27, in reality the best option for Everton though is for Beckford, Gueye, Silva, or even Baxter to come through and develop into a consistent scoring threat. That or Saha actually manages to stay healthy for the full season

  16. ebullientfatalist

French strikers tend to perform well in the Prem. But, I’m not convinced that Moyes’ 4-4-1-1 suits Remy.

  17. Outside Mid

Toffees now in on Remy? This guy’s name is being passed around more than a hooker amongst Les Bleus/too sensitive?

  18. Brian

@OM, considering he is French it makes a lot of sense, and its past the 1 month window so it isn’t too sensitive.

In other rumors Moyes is supposedly being targeted by Villa to replace MON, someone just shoot me if that happens.

  19. phil

Remy is turning into the Michel Bastos of 2010. My money is on him staying at Nice.

  20. Outside Mid

@ Brian: Hopefully that’s a rumor with no truth to it. If something like that happens, the scary thing would be that, as managers begin hopping from one club to the other, when the music stops, an EPL club might be manned by Phil Brown again! NOOO!

  21. Ivy

@Goosie: Just go with it. The Reds are my team too, but Timmy is the starting keeper on my fantasy squad. (As much as I love Pepe, I can’t afford him.)

  22. Brian

@OM, really the scariest part would be the fact that Sven the Swede could end up managing Everton, I would curl into a ball and cry if that occured

  23. whizalen

@Brian – who, in their right mind, would pay 8mil+ for yakubu in 2010? Mind boggling…

Can’t see Villa being too much of a step above Everton for Moyes, imo.

  24. Brian

@Whiz- Everton bought him for 11.5 mill for him back in 07, and obviously he isn’t worth that much but I oculd certainly see West Ham paying 8-9 considering that Grant is a big fan of Yakubus

  25. Goosie

    @Ivy – Hahah nice!

  26. MrCarbohydrate

Spurs are finishing 8th. Too stretched with Champions League. Also, can FIFA 10 be right about how good Jose Baxter is this year, please? I don’t mean, like, lower his ranking, I mean, you know, become good. Crikey.

  27. ian

Since no one is reading this post anymore, I should clarify that I have Everton as sixth behind the big four + Man Arabia. Ahead of villa and Spurs.
