The Russian Premier League powerhouses made some quality signings this summer—attacking midfielder Carlos Eduardo from TSG Hoffenheim, striker Obafemi Martins from VfL Wolfsburg, and defender Salvatore Bocchetti from Genoa—but they might want to rethink the goalkeeper situation.
Take this past weekend, and a visit to seemingly placid Spartak Nalchik, who finished 11th last season. Up 1-0 early, you’d forgive Rubin goalie Sergei Ryzhikov for not taking a speculative 70-yarder by Spartak’s Milan Jovanovic seriously, but oh, how he ends up with egg on his face.
To wit, just look at how badly he judges the flight/bounce of the long hoof upfield:
Bet he won’t make that mistake again. Jovanovic, not related to LFC’s new left-winger, was simply lofting it in the general direction of his striker, only to hit unexpected paydirt. And like I said in the intro, Rubin might wish to splash some rubles on a new shot-stopper during the next window.
The game finished 1-1.

“The game finished 1-1.”
A well-buried lede, indeed.
I like the cool little Russian chuckle-laugh by the commentator. Ha-ha-ha.
